So far, his attempts to do so have involved slapping the superpower with tariffs that have hurt American companies and consumers. Amazingly, per Politico, Trump didn’t expect Beijing to hit back with levies of its own in response, and the “retaliatory action has angered and surprised” him. But the real highlight of the evening came when the president referenced an unnamed country that one attendee told Politico was clearly China, and claimed “almost every student that comes over” to the U.S. from that nation “is a spy.” It’s the sort of paranoid, racist statement you may well hear from an old white man of a certain era, but in this case the paranoid, racist statement is coming from the president of the United States.
