When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

in one of the Boardwalk's high rise buildings (Galbraith House) for

! }. v( y, _" I0 v1 cis more than 1300 CAD now.(I still have a copy of the contract and for

600CAD/month plus utilities right now, some thing around 700CAD/month.

Other costs of leaving have also increased and the university
2 \' B. W% I. sincreases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international # \0 g- S5 {. ^( x i6 o; z
differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this, & R$ J* x6 p+ O5 A2 n0 B6 s
the fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers 9 _# D6 I3 V( D3 v; J
and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
0 b( L2 ^& O9 [2 l/ r8 nasked to look for a residence on open market.
$ a0 k/ L$ }% P* d, L1 f- k8 z6 U6 g; H2 O; [
While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
8 k6 V+ v, e& ]% ]increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid 5 u- E$ R+ R. J) P2 C
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
" {: T3 T" k, o- q. wadmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students
! Z% X8 q" C P' g$ T=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after
8 Z! ?5 D5 A9 K5 ^# I% `0 ?4 ]$ ? Dtuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just 0 j( ^2 K4 L7 v% _5 P, K- c1 a
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am " p0 B- o1 [% y! f C. O
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of , L4 f- z0 N2 S% `/ ] X
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was . [' \" Y8 L8 _4 H6 D0 K% J
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs. L( c+ P& v, C
# T) h5 s0 E5 b! d0 FAlso have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of
& A4 l! ?1 g; v( V: G0 W! XAlberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants
) Y& X) `" @$ A# k( D1 t, F% q) bfrom different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate 0 E; T5 M6 G; `/ e3 F2 u9 G$ k# |& e
students are the main pillars of research work at the university.

My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention 6 ]/ G8 J" V s4 w( s* ?/ ?6 s* j' G3 @. u
is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and 2 A1 T, L' r( L
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take: }6 v& R( B" ^/ E$ G
' n9 u5 n9 |, O$ S
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
8 m: A" F' f% w* Kgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?" K1 H* _$ P( x" B% ?/ q4 d
