In response to the economic uncertainty, the Fed made the unexpected move of approving a half-percentage point cut in its discount rate on loans to banks before trading began。The Fed decision sent the loonie surging 1.22 cents to 94.22 cents US -- after running as high as 94.74 cents US -- as the greenback weakened.( z8 \8 E9 i# Q: p
s8 r( R+ U4 G* y% U- F0 P E2 j0 hToronto's S&P/TSX composite index was ahead 111.84 points to 12,960.54 after jumping almost 400 points -- still in positive territory for the year after a 200.06-point slide Thursday wiped out the TSX's gains for the year so far.

The Fed decision means the discount rate -- the interest rate that it charges to make direct loans to banks -- will be lowered to 5.75 per cent, down from 6.25 per cent.

The Fed did not change its target for the more important federal funds rate, which has remained at 5.25 per cent for more than a year. 7 @) l3 a% y7 D1 [
