. F" \) V9 S. J7 j w7 xGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

2 _( Z( ~. _8 lYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
' Q7 E" p) S8 F& X0 wCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
* f! J! } s: Z9 j5 u* Wnews to report from that meeting.

, J# L8 b+ V" T& ]5 x( HFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 5 V0 e6 l+ W! Z8 ~& _- h
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
) o i$ @3 U* g. |4 W) Y0 ldifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
$ ^) E+ h- H6 k5 mstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
2 e. O( \( e7 R& wtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). * I9 d2 z1 B# @
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase / ]& Y+ e% e" Y; m
the differential for international graduate students." p( |" Q/ s7 t3 r
- A, ]$ S- P" M& l& P: Y0 l
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ) t5 ~) _$ d4 }, Y/ q& m. j0 C
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
. G0 Y) P" v6 U$ k* C* ]220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 4 @* }5 L* ]& @. O- n* }1 l) `
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 7 U h5 n1 ~- Y4 _1 i* Y" ]
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
2 w3 x2 X4 j4 I3 ctuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
6 k# w" q; B1 x P9 x4 jincreases once they are here.

4 z2 r% w, ?: o" M+ E2 U9 YThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 8 \5 C# I/ x0 s; k5 H
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
' N4 W$ J- u5 o& R7 jwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that + W: }: |2 |! V2 [ U! k
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
7 v7 H: A! P- r: f- I& U+ \7 gincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
7 M" o1 R7 Y. U" h6 ahelp. Thank you.
