Dear International Undergraduate Students,

0 a9 u9 S g. E& ^- A9 z7 I& v5 hYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
9 q2 c6 x! N% ^7 R" o a# a* _Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
* y" O& ^( Z0 ?( I, y/ C G! fnews to report from that meeting.
5 W9 e8 K: Q% a( }( s9 G- |& m# m9 n
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
$ V) D; K7 X( Sundergraduate international students from the increase to the
" Z5 U A; S) _ e$ `1 }! Wdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
2 k/ Q" o' L( i3 Dstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base R# E- r3 i1 J b! z5 W! P) {
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 6 l4 _* Y5 y# A) @( O! T- R
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase # Q6 `# z: @) J; H' a. T0 _
the differential for international graduate students.
7 M2 {6 Q8 Z% W, A* u5 c
5 V6 {2 a" M/ lNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an / m4 ]: D5 d0 x. P: S, Z/ v( `% L; ]
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
1 s: ]" a- E9 T' d4 o1 |5 }; Q220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
+ i+ W. _7 V$ g P. Owill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At " s) ~5 V. F2 O8 }6 l
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
0 A7 Q# ^0 b) m, @- mtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
! M" P g. w5 s5 I2 S: ]increases once they are here.; o0 F) M1 y- c" |. S
* K6 k- \; S0 U9 c% ?4 h: c$ OThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
" f2 c' ]. D G' b7 ainternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
* Y; O& {2 s1 j. H5 [would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
g z6 a! I; e6 |' H$ J* _0 _, F- Xhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this $ }/ e* S1 e( g
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your # D5 B! h$ A4 o9 V; N/ @0 n( H
