! Z8 ?  d+ A7 {; k  r- aGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,
+ o# J. q; S' _+ R4 o7 T$ V1 M
Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
4 S& B) ]7 Y# M9 JCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
; A, ]9 e- B7 F0 w$ fundergraduate international students from the increase to the
7 y" \5 R8 j. m0 ?5 M9 qdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
1 @! Q, u  e* b9 x/ sstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
/ W# _: n+ N  l4 W  Otuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
" d, r# Y, L1 a; _! [Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
) z3 `+ D/ W9 h; l$ i  Fthe differential for international graduate students.
; J  i: R7 {. l7 h  e
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
; u: @: Z: N+ Q  hwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
% d, q. C: x( s+ o+ n! jleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
" ~) k1 J2 P) X5 p# Zincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
) S: h$ m4 ~" G- ?8 Phelp. Thank you.
