Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
4 M: n! B" N% m% g- s- |news to report from that meeting.
/ O" n$ y: }% B2 E
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
; Q/ e& U9 I' O$ @undergraduate international students from the increase to the
0 E6 x# B- C* S3 p4 J6 t* xdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
' A3 h) C9 P1 |5 V/ Estudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
# |: e6 e7 h( Z3 ~2 ztuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
( I! s( W; Y0 y9 M8 t& @the differential for international graduate students.
2 E1 a9 m5 ^( q- N% w* }" q
' }/ }: M7 D- E& O% ENow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
* _* Z4 T0 V1 K3 I# kwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
5 `( E( c- Q0 H3 o. w* Y( ^& Lincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
% Y) C0 r- k1 b3 Owould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
1 e) N( W4 O4 n) w& Jincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
