, f) M5 l! t6 P6 L* m" zCALGARY — Screams filled the air after a 17-year-old teen was killed after being struck in the head with a pickaxe at a house party.

* ]0 o, j5 j' CNeighbours said about 100 teens were at a house in southeast Calgary when the attack happened in a detached garage about 11:50 p.m. Saturday. 5 v; K( ?+ \3 s& n( ^9 h$ N
8 S! v+ U; J4 RLisa Poole, who lives two doors down from where the teen died, rushed outside when she heard a lot of screaming. 7 G# X7 ^% ?! T" {/ D- \/ w- X1 w6 f

I saw one boy laying there with a pickaxe stuck through the front of his head and some blood on the ground ... I haven’t slept at all and I can’t get that picture out of my head.” u! t2 Z* x$ f( `

A man who lives next door said he saw a body on the ground in the garage. % i+ V, A/ P0 _' z" h8 ]0 B1 C, K
! x3 ]& O# i; P! ?9 h; v2 p“I was standing out back having a cigarette then I heard a kid screaming, ‘They killed him,’ then they all scattered,” said Jeff, who didn’t want to give his last name.

Jeff said two high school-aged girls live at the house with their mother. He said large parties are common at the residence.

Friends identified the dead teen as Matt McKay, 17. 6 R& \3 i9 D4 z0 M) \: g; Y5 ^) ~6 N

Chris Briggs, who grew up in the same neighbourhood and was friends with McKay, described him as nice guy and avid athlete.

“He was a pretty good guy,” he said. “He played hockey with my friends, he was huge into hockey.”

“We’re talking to a bunch of people who were there to find out what happened,” he said.
