Edmonton new home prices see biggest drop in 23 years

EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

- u! q. o& {9 b6 a/ UCompared to June, Edmonton new home prices nudged downward 0.2 per cent.


. N. r2 \; _3 y! R" f" H" @Calgary saw a 0.3 per cent slide compared to July of last year.

"Markets in these cities continue to adjust after experiencing record price increases in the last two and a half years," the federal agency said.

Even heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency  said.

( c( S/ ^* p: sThe fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.

; D0 ?3 N4 C, A. {6 ], R5 IAs the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.

7 k5 B8 {4 K  N2 i. G9 IPrices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.
