" z! @" S$ z7 M+ I* ^EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

Edmonton's cooling market showed the biggest year-over-year drop of any Canadian city.

$ V/ S" Q. Z/ p8 R' ^Even heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.! J$ m$ y3 H" K$ d+ s* w$ d4 C. }) n

The fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.0 n# K0 l4 M3 z! }+ w" b) I

As the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.1 U( b+ r A4 f4 b( X

Prices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.
