EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

"Markets in these cities continue to adjust after experiencing record price increases in the last two and a half years," the federal agency said.* ?" X7 r3 v% b- M

Even heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.

( c( S/ ^* p: sThe fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.

; D0 ?3 N4 C, A. {6 ], R5 IAs the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.& c" Y5 m$ q- r; Q* O0 v1 |+ _
7 k5 B8 {4 K N2 i. G9 IPrices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July./ z3 Q9 M$ s3 _+ K' M2 J" E3 Z
7 c$ G/ @) v) W"The growth rate of the index has been on a downward trend since September 2006," the agency said.
