EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

Compared to June, Edmonton new home prices nudged downward 0.2 per cent.

Calgary saw a 0.3 per cent slide compared to July of last year.

Even heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.- j) M! v& V6 k5 h5 H6 w4 Y3 d# c

The fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.

! p2 ?9 M# L! oAs the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.9 Y% j4 r) r% ~( R5 W( T

Prices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.1 W4 I4 e* A/ Y0 F$ f

"The growth rate of the index has been on a downward trend since September 2006," the agency said.
