Position: Research Consultant / Project: Unemployment & Underemployment within Ethno-cultural Communities, Environmental Scan & Database / Location: Edmonton / Project Completion: July 2009 / Closing Date: 11.28.08.

' ^  F/ G' a9 k/ l# wThe Multicultural Health Brokers Co-operative supports immigrant/refugee individuals and families to attain optimum health through relevant health education, community development and advocacy support. The MCHB seeks a Research Consultant with strong organizational/reporting skills for a community based research project and environmental scan of under and unemployed immigrants in the Edmonton ethno-cultural communities of Edmonton.2 _1 E. s  `, Q: ]( T& J' W

The Project: The purpose of the research project is to explore, define and document the issue of unemployment and underemployment within ethno-cultural communities in Edmonton.  Focus groups and other activities will be coordinated within six ethno-cultural groups to create an inventory of the skills and abilities of unemployed and underemployed immigrants and refugees including youth (aged 25-30) with a working ability in English language. / M7 {8 }) g* w% g  U

2 W2 E+ t; t5 N7 L" J7 d+ a+ V; vTheir employability profiles will be compared to the categories most highly requested in temporary foreign worker applications. Community animation will be used and a database of employable local immigrant workers with their skills will be created and made available to key stakeholders. The project will run through to the end of July 2009.6 o3 [- Z& n5 b& Z" X. w

$ [1 d6 Q' |- [/ f& SResearch Consultant: He/she will have a background in community based research, instrument design and development. S/he will demonstrate an understanding of current issues in the Alberta workforce and be familiar with key government services supporting employment/immigration. The Research Consultant will work independently and as part of a core team that includes the Project Coordinator, Database Consultant and project support staff.% B8 K+ i% h" A+ M

Responsibilities: The research consultant will provide a final report synthesizing the findings from a community based research project gathering information on the barriers and solutions to employment for highly skilled and educated immigrants in the Edmonton area.

( o' M# E  a- g  v; G5 D$ XProject responsibilities/deliverables include: provide ongoing support and feedback to the Project Coordinator in the design and implementation of a community based research strategy; support ongoing review and design of a participatory research process that includes focus groups discussions and an on-line tool gathering detailed information from highly skilled and educated immigrants in the Edmonton area.

$ r* E$ i0 s6 APLUS: provide background research and support for the dBase Consultant to ensure that privacy legislation/practices are adhered to in the collection and storage of on-line participant personal data; conduct a review of relevant literature documenting barriers to employment for immigrants, employer and government strategies and recommendations for multi-sectoral change; data analysis of focus group discussions and on-line participant data; produce a detailed report synthesizing research findings and recommendations for action in line with the project goals.  2 R2 I# i$ J1 h8 }; T5 F7 L6 O
