There are no changes in the way Albertans register for publicly-funded health care. However, as announced in the 2008 budget, health premiums have been eliminated as of January 1, 2009.

4 v( U' w# q0 _; v7 `; hPayment and collection of health care premiums owed prior to January 1, 2009 will continue under these guidelines:

8 ~9 `5 ?0 f) u' c1 W 1. All Albertans are responsible to pay premiums unless they qualify for premium assistance, government-sponsored income support programs, or are senior citizens.* ?, g5 x/ y ?" |6 G5 X" U. X0 G" j
2. Employers and benefit administrators who register and pay premiums on behalf of their employees will continue to do so.
" G4 M! v E) {: U# |0 m0 _ 3. Alberta Health and Wellness will continue to pursue collections from those who fail to pay premiums.& c8 X, Z9 e! Q/ C! A
4. Contributors to Alberta Blue Cross or other supplementary insurance plans that provide prescription drug, dental, and other extended coverage, will still pay those premiums, as they have not been eliminated.
