City of Edmonton, Waste Management Branch

Dear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the* W& b T2 Z/ @) }4 H
Master Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule+ O5 b! p* p& n; w+ j
(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about
* ]- @) t+ c+ C3 a: e. [1 Qenvironmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste
4 @& V; g) Q( ?3 q3 e. n* wmanagement; home composting; household hazardous waste;/ y% c" C0 s& v9 Y1 d# }! u% n
vermin-composting and residential recycling.
5 D+ A# x+ ~8 s
: L6 B: n7 j8 p: o& jThis course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips, ^$ K' b2 U6 Z8 p l& {! O
to various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates
: v0 ?$ g* [- ccomplete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:( X% F3 b% m l
reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important2 |+ Z% N0 Y+ g$ ~' P
resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the
# X2 o) {" x8 o9 cimportance of composting and recycling.
& F" C8 [* R+ K$ z) g1 A6 C
0 s/ S, a; u, r1 Y" H) _. LExamples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the! [$ J& W, u+ w' ^/ s/ V
Reuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;/ G0 {9 w% r" l& g/ Y. H! O5 B
public education display booths; assisting with programs and
- ]' b1 { r! ?- c& b" s; w; S/ {. emaintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at
( I& x$ R f# u6 \6 [various demonstration gardens and general public and school
' o# B s% `; s( G9 V& ]! npresentations.. W* Y: k2 z7 T3 n2 ~" z3 u4 ] c. r$ E# ]
2 ?3 W" I4 j% MThere are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and
5 h) A( ~5 l/ Z* H. }. dvolunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the
1 o2 M- a, O* L) zmost. Curious about recycling and composting and sharing your- c8 g L6 |* R0 ^: p( \+ h
knowledge with others, then apply to become a Master. ~, x4 p" S! h; v: A5 P
