Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.- W+ m, S5 |' P: j5 l
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
' q/ u5 h6 I% ?% ZThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected." j) Z* _3 B7 k7 k. S' b. z
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.% O- o( H2 {( v& x% j x
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
( l3 A$ \. D7 _" PEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
) z% b; }5 q4 t" c1 v% oThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
