Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

1 z* l0 z V; f% _EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

3 z2 K5 ^$ g0 a" w( WThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected. q* @; }4 S- E8 S6 U- r% e _; c' n
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.$ ^/ g5 ~5 Z1 Y; B( l, j
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 6 o8 _" m! }; u1 G) m4 p! ]+ L' P
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
% e: V) c# E+ I3 K% T$ W; u. ~! g, sThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
