Edmonton's population grows by 30,000/ K; T9 r4 b; d+ \( T Q9 V+ i, a3 c

- R3 d6 a8 O; Q! C4 l7 CEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning., A8 p$ m+ e& o, S4 s2 O
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
/ J* m; A8 H; }6 wThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.2 o# y4 [, `6 q! \. `5 h' ~9 H
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.1 w9 f" t, B/ I& M
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 9 O7 [* o8 b: [: C% u
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.6 z1 F T7 g. ^
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
