Edmonton's population grows by 30,000$ U- h. {* u" e5 O0 z4 }! j; ?, B

+ e# c; r- W, R$ g9 ~; ^$ b1 DEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

2 n$ n( |7 a! o# B. mThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected., E- A1 o& `2 K* H' A
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.1 h8 f9 i8 \/ ^2 ^2 z* c9 \
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 5 s9 l- `! H6 p6 O
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.! y& g0 ] J) A6 Z g
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
