 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason9 I7 J& d+ g, l; H

) G. |& p3 r8 f& N, r/ r* S) V The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
) S+ {9 N. W. Ato their first ministry, to reopen a church
2 g# ~) V$ r0 Y" y0 ^in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
# O- Y0 U9 d' j! h8 Lexcited about their opportunities. When they saw 7 O% k7 w& @+ Q: j* U+ o$ D7 f$ t: w
their church, it was very run down and needed 0 q" ?& R. i5 }$ |1 q
much work. They set a goal to have everything # [( B4 W" B8 I8 g
done in time to have their first service $ @0 x" {! e/ H+ b
on Christmas Eve.
8 G8 R! Z% f# j: |T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
/ X1 d9 K6 Q p0 p7 ppainting, etc, and on December 18
0 w4 N% ^4 v# D% Y- fwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
* T$ p9 A" {0 [2 W- N& MO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 1 r2 X- |1 y [" U; i3 s3 C
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
' o# Q9 {) J2 X" {! R0 L7 A6 `( [ O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.2 v/ v* K. S+ y C: Y
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
8 o8 a3 [% \/ h0 N! t: aleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
2 U0 Z/ }& G0 w8 ?5 A# Y& p20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall + ]6 _# e, a% t$ X4 z6 _0 X2 v. N+ }
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, , C- i$ Y/ t+ r/ S# U: i, p7 Q5 i
beginning about head high.
6 R! r' |5 L" n3 f, kT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
% \0 h" F1 e! V8 U. _5 f( ]6 {and not knowing what else to do but postpone $ g0 \0 r+ ^- z$ @# Y# g* }% P
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
' ]8 Z# G7 ]! @2 l8 cOn the way he noticed that a local business was 3 r; a/ h, u0 I/ F+ c r
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 9 {/ k# F: A1 N3 @9 h5 p% {
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, # S+ B7 b* T$ A
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 3 x5 N# }0 b7 W% m; q2 E4 Q3 a
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross % b9 F* |0 l& z! |! f* u1 D& `
embroidered right in the center. It was just + ]7 g0 B `1 W
3 m: S b. j( k$ `4 C g( L% j- w
) {' c* z5 T# j- L
) j5 T J& t: M2 \& `
- K J# o% t5 j: [. c8 Z/ O. A" m2 H. P
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. ; x# l1 Z, T4 i, C7 q6 {9 ?2 ^5 V# M
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
& T' N: n2 U9 i j. B. p. ~woman running from the opposite direction was # u& Z9 ?/ t6 l, O
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
( [; a3 L" x* B6 ]1 Finvited her to wait in the warm church for
3 E, I, n$ _, w1 Uthe next bus 45 minutes later.
. @7 y/ m, x( u+ K* m% y( j2 H5 L' n7 K8 \; H
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor : c. t( R* u( w9 e3 W5 z) f9 p
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
- v9 r& _. I9 k9 `6 {, E, R$ C, |up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 2 h! ]& E- R; ]
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
' e. Y8 n$ Y- a: |# @ {) gT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center3 ?0 g1 N/ w0 V) b& u7 T4 p* O
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"+ n4 r% e% Y, J! v
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
3 W4 `2 o. y; {: I; E: [. d; bThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check5 k1 e( o# l/ W' w
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into' J9 w, a" @; Q6 v
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 2 {7 d2 p& R; w3 G d- t
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ) d0 V$ W5 \) }, X
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 2 A) b' k& r; @7 C- H" D
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The * S0 `& T; t, |8 ~
woman explained that before the war she and ( D. X$ Q7 g9 P4 D7 c: G
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
' m! L k0 s5 J) E- m4 ~( c) s5 f. |8 S9 K) I, n- r0 v2 d
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
9 o' Z( s4 e7 ?9 k. ?) D [+ uHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
8 v6 T/ R; G' ?$ ?8 ^7 D9 JHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
: w3 E1 e% N, f8 ]$ _( Y! Phusband or her home again. 0 b, L0 P' f( O7 l' Q5 s$ w) F
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;& o7 s: U! X5 {1 ^1 e/ r
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.# f+ P: R* A5 i" @; C
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That2 E9 M2 a- G! P7 E# _2 H
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
; ^0 @# V- C9 q3 Tside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ' X% |2 y4 n2 n' B- a4 g( }
for the day for a housecleaning job.' g, V! j. ]7 w' }' {! x
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas # B n! g+ _5 K) }6 l
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
( U1 _9 U( }8 U- H! u. `1 {+ w( _spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
4 B" t1 S. H" npastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
" ~, ~6 [! U3 }' I0 @2 T" F: iand many said that they would return.. % o) s+ v- Q+ C. Z2 W* `
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
) Y' ?$ p! D% ?" Z+ Vfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
5 |# ]) o7 G# C. C: Ypews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
) r b- E, f: ]7 fwasn't leaving.
2 N9 L* o* e" w D8 E* B6 B+ QThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
8 A' I% J% z! r2 o Z j* W0 q sthe front wall because it was identical to one 5 ?: N& V: g5 U1 k D* ~4 h
that his wife had made years ago when ' J4 G- a! l" U4 z
they lived in Austria before the war and how
- y& i. n6 c& Y% R' {. b( N0 ^could there be two tablecloths so much alike? " l$ Z3 O/ W* |- N# Q
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
! a J1 @. g. a) b* |! tforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 5 I0 t U7 z( I/ H
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
% A, R: ]/ D/ p. K3 |8 P5 }% q! uput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
) K2 Q* C, T% u7 Q3 ]again all the 35 years between.
5 w! _/ x4 a; H$ _3 }T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
- f* n) `; L' R5 N0 atake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
; I& d! r ]# ?Island and to the same house where the pastor , X7 V0 y3 F( V
had taken the woman three days earlier.
, E2 v2 r$ {5 J9 Y; M6 H/ CHe helped the man climb the three flights of; f1 c( e9 X; k7 O
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on' `) X& e3 L9 B- ?6 n5 d( p7 Y
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas ) E8 D1 p0 X; e- S; e8 `! A3 D
reunion he could ever imagine.2 e, w+ w) g$ j: o% j' V+ T
