美国人非常喜欢体育，特别是球类运动。他们热衷于橄榄球，棒球，垒球，篮球，网球和高尔夫球，等等。每当电视转播精彩球赛的时候，马路上的汽车都会少一些，因为大家都呆在家里看电视了。大概是由于美国人对球类这么感兴趣，所以有不少习惯用语都和“球”- ball 这个字有关。
