17. Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another,' L" I" E2 r+ X- m
        我们教区的牧师总是为各种各样的事筹集资金。
: m7 l* x& e- {% U1 X18. but he has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock repaired.
2 M5 |: G  `) \- T- {/ o0 i        但始终未能筹足资金把教堂的钟修好。
1 L* \5 ~6 R- U19. The big clock which used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since.
' a8 J3 W" U8 e6 b, R9 [' u: u        教堂的钟很大,以前不分昼夜打点报时,但很多年前遭到毁坏,从此便无声无息了。" H/ l: |' q" t. N2 e
20. One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours!
4 B. \6 D% w: y* B/ r, V; a        一天夜里,我们的牧师突然被惊醒了,大钟又在“打点”报时了!
' A- t: V' y. _/ m, }; O0 Y7 \% B21. Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped.

+ b0 Z0 k( I9 e7 N- n  H22. Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on.

8 e5 v" n5 O4 s! F1 {( h23. In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer.+ T7 e0 H; f% K* }

24. 'Whatever are you doing up here Bill?' asked the vicar in surprise.  D( ^6 j+ G+ S! n6 Y3 H0 S

25. 'I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill." |& Y3 }2 c$ h

26. I've been coming up here night after night for weeks now./ G: H  p' A$ i2 ?, @0 V

27. You see, I was hoping to give you a surprise.% e2 s, B" Q5 ]) _" U

28. 'You certainly did give me a surprise!' said the vicar.7 x  E% w' }: L- y0 |

29. You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well.

30. Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.0 C1 _4 F/ `$ Q' z- H& {+ J+ E5 W

31. That's the trouble, vicar,' answered Bill.

) O5 D* b  U- U32. It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it.7 E5 F' e9 u7 z% Z& J

33. We'll get used to that, Bill,' said the vicar.. x8 D* {( Z2 B, x
        “大家慢慢就习惯了,比尔,”牧师说。
3 }" d% F  c8 P2 F34. Thirteen is not as good as one, but it's better than nothing.
  S9 g5 y/ e' ?8 i  ^- E& m6 e        “13下是不如1下好,但总比1下也不敲强。5 o- B/ o% h) K$ p; V4 g
35. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea.: h' E; X- C2 O. a, _
        来,咱们下楼去喝杯茶吧。”
