on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear7 @3 c9 K. u( R
that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet, F \& A+ ^3 i
service providers.3 S3 q5 {& | g% _; C1 L6 d: ]8 a
* W- e/ y0 L* N" b1 w) [$ F& _Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are, b2 L6 w* p! B. n
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
" ^( o" Y) R. b+ c# Minnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
' e$ K# M% E- }; B( c# HCanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
' [9 u, q* s% h8 C; f" v6 Xcarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
9 U5 |: h5 U- I. `$ lguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
( |, y2 ^5 w# }/ x* _2 _investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing B* b$ z7 ~4 r; U" U1 f
market forces to prevail. 2 H4 W- j0 x/ z; w4 T
% \0 K" Z3 }6 o0 \) ~
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
9 j- K- r9 |' h6 d. Ochosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
8 Y% X( U }( y* bnumber of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the- V: ?! B3 Q3 D0 w& S8 i
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in# b& u' O; ^5 D# r8 c* ]( B$ M
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
( G4 i8 x( E+ a- m7 M# l% o: K8 |6 jcompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that, x8 H2 Y8 D. \9 j
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.& U% U; }* ?$ p: p( J% j
