it all depand on what you want. a diamond ring can be broken down into the following 4 categories:( Z. i% h6 T, H ]
$ d- X0 Y2 P* {
size
/ b+ c/ \9 E7 p: Z3 {4 n# t! zcolour) X X* D N2 k3 i
clarity, I# @4 L" J* G2 L5 n2 C, J
cut- ~; u/ m( n; `8 w
/ j% ]4 x; d' h- ]
if you want a very high clarity and colour, then $10K CAD may only get you a 0.5 ct diamond if you don't care as much about colour and clarity, then you can easily get a 1.0 ct or bigger ring. typically, girls care more about the clarity and size. 9 q8 J3 m, [# J6 k" F" f
* O: x7 ^+ Y n6 ithe cutting of the diamond is also very important. a well cut 0.5 ct diamond may look as big or maybe even bigger on surface than a 1.0 ct diamond if it wasn't cut properly. $ w3 V! F& c) h5 ]6 r
! _0 H5 g# t) v w2 W0 N' C; rthe solitary princess diamond is the most popular style for an engagement ring. solitaty means a single large diamond (not a whole bunch of small diamonds or dusts but with the total weight added to a 1.0 ct) and princess means it's cut into a round shape on top (not square or oval shape)

; b+ g, q7 z' Z# Nthe band (ring itself) can be found in white gold 14K or 18K. typically, the better the diamond, the better band it comes with. ie <$5000 ring usually comes with a 14K band but >$5000 ring will come with a 18K band. 5 K/ J/ x3 l1 B1 w
