Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression

now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3

within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color/ d! L p4 J$ P( e% u) P( I' w
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance
! Y& m9 H1 M8 A4 B0 k2 vin low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800
' c; k. f- @5 Q5 ?. lallows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject( u) C, \( g2 d% ?6 y
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
; R \. I$ G, d E) N! twas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum, {5 R* }+ F. K; ^
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was& G0 {- B- F$ P! i3 i# ^- v, f! M2 r
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
- H8 P3 R/ z- l E6 nconvenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown/ j; J( Z) y$ V9 W* n l
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,1 L2 b# D) p) r; {
thanks to the D800.
7 P2 R# { P9 [$ DWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
' B9 N' `) d& D% u' }. y% R3 | {( P36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
1 m f. x* k! e( crange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
# g& e: D& |+ P8 |! M' z \the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a H/ q7 @4 r+ d( x9 J' ~: n7 t
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as( b1 j) ^, c( t ~( k
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
0 n- C# M' N% f& t- TAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
8 }1 Z6 G% s# {( bhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is( F$ b1 v; \: R2 B& W
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
* ~ v u; u/ @1 K. Ralso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New+ c6 K( ] {9 f! _
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
+ w9 ?/ o$ W/ ~+ T& Oin such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality' O$ k& k* k: s: b; e
prints and video.
1 z1 A" Z9 ^% B% [) `To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is% z k- v2 b% I
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models! ^8 T) Y* L2 X9 M& I. s F' R5 a
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
' E: ?7 n5 M4 Q+ O: T9 M; ^8 X. zcountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first" R0 ^3 k0 y' ?- r
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws4 d2 s4 I+ y5 _) i: E" ^" L7 H% E
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of! G1 k& @2 Z" M! ^) N3 [
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I5 t. d v: x# M+ v% Q
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as
4 N0 I! B! o! d# t* lthough they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse3 r- J# _* m5 Q6 Y! |
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add; w+ W# O. U' i7 @* v
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the! \$ U( y! D: T) S
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express) L) s; [) c |" V( J2 I
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.* r2 i$ i: b: x' k5 ~
As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,+ I* A" ^: _ ^3 @5 u
compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal% d2 J3 |0 h. t- q* n
artistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for

architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they
