You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,. a" ]( X2 V& y* D

6 X* t, u8 o9 f5 |I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
8 ?" ^  b3 ?4 |: ~, p( g& {5 A- {2 i* T) s
His name was Kyle.4 r/ j- H) M  r: ~# h

8 z6 a, X9 S$ b& T! zIt looked like he was carrying all of his
' E5 e# C( r( L# r4 WBooks.
  j5 ~# E% A+ B2 v
$ E. V7 k# ]' kI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?; V9 A6 @' |- W. n0 k/ ^

  N) t* C3 T, c" f) ]He must really be a nerd.": x1 k6 Q! h$ d( g' V; x! j

8 F! o5 h( t% PI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
# P- f7 I& I) w- u5 [7 H6 \% h3 M" y' b) a( E* m8 V& v( J
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.# m" ^2 a* a7 M) r7 o8 ?5 w
7 |$ M/ M+ T2 a
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.0 j+ O- t! j* c1 Z
; }% a( N( @5 ^4 r9 `' ^! n
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
* B7 n/ e( g4 _6 P8 g$ @
' E8 f# w: q1 N% E+ {/ p8 XHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
' U1 ^  R! V$ k2 ^$ N
& P- H/ Z# X# c* c; j. }2 U# XMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
% D0 |+ F1 Q' n; \0 E: c! D4 b' x$ `
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
7 h7 k8 m1 Q$ w% y' e" M
) f0 [" P) w2 `They really should get lives.: |' V; `7 d% H
# T- L0 M% L& @  {+ p3 |6 F0 u
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"+ [9 C" W3 m$ c  E/ e9 J

0 F8 {& p" T0 u$ i) q5 J( JThere was a big smile on his face.) s, A4 u3 ]+ \7 ~- j- d' [

- r! N4 ~; `5 @& yIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.$ ~, G' L5 |% ~; i: S

0 F- {4 }8 g+ w6 II helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived., F; g) p% s) `! c
7 {- i( j1 r  g2 a9 \6 _( R6 X
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
( @- D, Q- o# |2 v0 X% o$ L  m( P
" B: Z: S  [( l7 E/ mHe said he had gone to private school before now.* c6 x. A8 \/ ]" N
6 D" g4 T5 B$ K. j- z
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.+ Z) d- M7 n6 \9 C" O

# L9 p0 ?: A. MWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
7 m' y! q3 u: U; A6 L& K1 |
- |' U6 I6 b/ g1 @' J; RHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.8 r& f7 I/ {* k0 k) H' z

9 d' o  k  s0 FI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends./ t6 R' s, Y3 G) e$ \
& c& Y& _* u- Y+ W4 `
He said yes.
1 I; m( [* R: _5 Z% _$ O! Q
" J( t6 |- ~$ |  ?* \3 uWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
2 S8 p8 B* Z7 q2 M1 b0 r
0 W0 j+ B% r5 g3 T6 }Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
# _6 C& M/ \# y+ [
9 J/ O& s1 V0 p6 t! {I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!( ~" c+ W) J1 G2 A6 y  q: Z
: B0 D) `3 U) W* s
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.4 S+ m$ p6 ]6 o/ _- E/ Y

  Z9 {* P. D# d$ p- D) YOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.+ M" K. V6 W+ J5 ]
/ d% l; i4 f- b% a, N& Y  m. E
When we were seniors, we began to think8 l( m  P0 ?+ e  s3 |- s
About college.
' J( S$ Y+ D. o  B$ B. ?) }  i
1 k! ]. u. Y9 ]% I( m+ l9 NKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
- R4 R* E0 v- YWas going to Duke.
/ y1 ]7 _# P8 X4 n
% s0 o$ a/ k. HI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
6 }7 L# a* ~9 q, ]# h5 f; }: B2 z" e
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.5 r0 p$ |1 u- h5 Y2 D6 i" p

' v5 K0 u, Z- v% k8 ~3 nKyle was valedictorian of our class.
6 z4 o4 @" `4 V# A$ I$ A% }# Q# A$ L/ J4 k" t
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.  `" u' E6 P9 H, ?+ X- L) G* S# Z3 [
4 U& R/ u( p  V& r5 R
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.$ y8 M% s/ U8 q9 k7 X
) W" l! ~1 `. ^& P2 Q, n2 @3 e
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
* k2 l9 J0 r: F
5 f2 U7 N0 [& K  s" F7 m2 F9 F3 AGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
% w& P* M* D- h. i8 n( i
2 O: c3 P3 n; n, V3 THe looked great.
6 f& q8 g! c3 C+ E, `. p  l' F( _! @. e$ o: g" G
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.9 x' I* s% p0 C' {% b: }

4 k/ A2 j$ I+ a" |1 tHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
: |: z2 \# A6 T4 _0 u
1 A  f& X3 O, |! F+ v. L* i1 OHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.' |" l/ A" j5 P/ W; s* y

4 W# m5 V  I1 c: V% K% UBoy, sometimes I was jealous.! e* T# p8 P5 C: X8 w" K$ t

9 Z9 Z- E* ]3 }0 FToday was one of those days.
# R* F* K  u% Y/ c- w% l# Y
" E. D% r6 |" G0 z% _I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
9 ^7 B" s5 T$ ~" N- @0 N: d; u
0 d) N+ ~$ N& c9 t" |" r' B1 I" hSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
6 c6 m) {# H0 o) ]  ]4 @, R  S0 K( o9 j5 ~
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
, ?! y9 y2 n. n+ O* Y
) G. ]+ g  K7 [$ k# K! ]"Thanks," he said.: n3 k" c6 }5 E, A' e& z) U
( M1 S" Q# G7 z. d& m
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
. H! E) O9 e4 q0 B1 I& B; Z- [$ a* r- a- j
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.# z! T( S' h9 j/ I* n- v% i" h

  Y: j2 y( h. r+ t) `$ VYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
; w, V, ]6 s; |( U! L$ h, L
" |$ i# d( n/ F5 p& i1 T; RI am here to tell all of you that being a
/ V( l( i# b4 T2 o: m* P& `: ZFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.

  z" {: X3 Y6 l4 ^I am going to tell you a story."2 J) J9 z0 ?! S9 F7 f  k

! F9 ]3 Q0 g* R' N+ V' ?$ c. BI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.# u6 B* J" q+ G

+ U& a$ K4 T" \: Y3 hHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.: Q+ h2 l% `$ F7 ]' O
9 O. T- S1 R) g$ c2 t& p
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
; e2 n# ]' x- ~  U2 `
  R1 R( z+ U. K; B- ]) y# d4 ZHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
* N  r' F* }1 w/ K) z1 S1 a. t6 I+ a, N" w
"Thankfully, I was saved.
! F/ Z% b. p/ ]: B
$ w: e) e- ?4 f  h  {- }' S; Z1 aMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
& W" d1 w% I7 v6 C. G9 _& R+ R& v6 C$ l) J( K
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
4 P/ n# D1 |% S( \2 |  @2 c0 G; I1 f
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.; o+ D- l3 v( h! s. d" F
' R8 T$ H( G, B2 z) Z* i+ P
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
( ?( F: Z# N; q- f6 r: Q: W
7 i$ Q( \- Z3 r; |2 w4 CNever underestimate the power of your actions.% u' J3 v. X3 p4 m- A& Z8 o: K

% N9 q" \- k( E: b7 N3 vWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
# e& D  ?& K% B/ J+ \  h0 t! ^
4 w/ ^2 {+ V( [- v* dFor better or for worse.
0 ?2 t' e7 ]- p+ y0 d3 F& s% w8 n0 l6 _  j- j
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
( o$ y5 N1 r3 z' Q  r2 a+ E6 T  L; e$ e& q9 s0 p( a4 C6 [
Look for God in others.9 K5 ]2 e8 k7 Z9 Z& x) \+ B# p

2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

4 o0 `, V& a) C" n% @8 D2 FAs you can see, I took choice number 1.+ z( o9 }8 P' f

There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.& f& K4 I( z- X9 S4 f* V1 t/ @; H% y2 G

Tomorrow is mystery.

' S/ E& s$ l- H7 k8 n4 GToday is a gift.
