You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,/ p: N0 N5 {# u. ]5 b2 K+ D
3 c9 y+ J$ N# h+ Q
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
( q& T8 F3 }6 Y1 z9 \+ l- l
0 {8 g# [0 ], z4 u3 B6 zHis name was Kyle.
2 W: Q1 t. m/ k" ~/ E+ Z
/ ]2 J; R: q9 N9 J) RIt looked like he was carrying all of his
4 \' C- l" ^# ^6 ?+ L1 ]Books.
$ x% q9 Y, W5 r9 _1 Y) u
5 Z9 A% ^' N6 _$ xI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
0 h/ y4 L, s5 X# B! y* T' B# N/ d4 \0 z+ a8 X$ N$ e: t
He must really be a nerd."
( A. q3 J/ O" a  H8 B* W
. r+ L7 ~+ |, h: Y! i- b& bI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.7 D( U8 J; ^- k: Q" P5 G
+ k) `7 l" c- k' U0 ]. P; r/ n
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.: d3 }, E* P$ r6 u1 R" b& X

9 [9 |5 B2 p& ?* FThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
7 w8 L: s' d* E) g: P4 ?
1 K: z% }- j0 r7 b5 eHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
3 V% I  v$ _. s, h. e# D
+ v) L2 {& d% ~0 p' mHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes% f/ S3 Q% s! W5 A3 ]8 X5 T, p- l

3 u/ ~8 r: t0 W7 Z7 F" p7 WMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.9 [5 W1 Z$ b! E! f$ u6 Q

  N/ S/ x. h. ?, |, I1 u6 y* wAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks./ e( A* i. \& B5 {2 l" D
6 f$ }, C: _1 t4 m' V( o# I$ r3 X
They really should get lives.! p9 r" z- D% B. T  ?* {
5 s, ~) ]( I7 I" m5 \6 L4 l, ^
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
7 f: q/ l: d' p# t& A: w$ p& M6 y9 _
There was a big smile on his face.
/ k, G7 O2 r' ~9 B
! i2 B/ y8 r+ e( T! u* ~5 }" O% JIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.  C; J2 M6 s1 h: K; A8 l* ?6 T3 c

% h. ]2 x1 L8 P6 SI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.1 d+ [* [& |9 _# Q3 f; \

% [" H* O/ @5 X1 MAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.9 e7 R0 X% o4 S; Q: x) ~6 `

  u) M5 h( f+ O3 p- g0 hHe said he had gone to private school before now.
, ?2 L  b) Z! |
+ _/ @) b* B5 \4 m  _$ eI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.: R% D  l) a( ]: {: E: }) W9 @
; F2 K8 I4 [% w8 @% l, {2 b/ b
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.' O& i6 w/ J) |) m, @

2 q/ U- g+ D) G( cHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
% C7 E8 _" U. T3 J4 B8 x, g8 v: y( _$ m3 n' e& J
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.: ^; ^8 D* w' u2 A# ^6 }

/ ]; |# i7 n" Y) \0 jHe said yes.1 X) I0 N8 B9 F! N8 r
$ C6 V; F% N; b: \
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
7 [" ^! Y2 p( |0 L/ x' o/ y. v5 E/ c! y; X
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.  Z7 m3 g! h& y: ?& S( \; v

5 f/ V- h# q$ M* `" d( M0 fI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!. S  G/ r7 F) Q

0 {; n6 I9 E5 V& @6 ]- P5 k" He just laughed and handed me half the books.) }; j6 n/ S1 `9 o
- _& C. ]& N# U
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.. |! u' X6 }' y, c$ w
/ M) F" c; K& M4 o+ _& _
When we were seniors, we began to think
' o: C* P* f( Z' S8 v9 eAbout college./ A2 V9 w* H+ v3 R& ]8 B& Q. x
  @& o/ y) u, i2 G; F
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I0 ?! C+ E* E& _' l  N1 u6 b* ]' K
Was going to Duke.% O$ T# I: j2 k5 f& l

8 f* z/ z% e# Z% v3 ^: Q3 KI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
* L7 R0 P) U9 Z+ E9 O8 L+ ~0 Y7 o& ~: N; z; {3 d) M/ c
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
1 i3 S1 m3 D9 k9 e8 K4 u; p
! f4 j& i5 r4 x$ i. hKyle was valedictorian of our class.
& l  r, @. Y0 k
9 c. @; y$ B; I! WI teased him all the time about being a nerd.4 a2 r% O; \3 ~; h  t. ?6 K1 `6 h) g; \

% k7 |% o/ c- R8 c$ ^$ M  mHe had to prepare a speech for graduation." b, i# N, s$ y2 E0 @

/ {8 d- A- V1 \$ a( A7 EI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
; _7 X+ `. [$ f  H! }6 @: [% `$ X1 b4 j$ K( U: N# p; z+ z
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
; [1 j: k, f/ R, {$ v$ g5 N2 a4 |7 |' `* ^' u
He looked great.3 Z8 p3 p5 I$ p$ L& a2 K

' j; n3 s5 f* ]3 w- U% a4 W2 L! qHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
: ~. |/ h& {; C9 o) B# @! L  u2 O1 x2 J
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.6 y7 o. [5 c: T) D1 g; g- r7 g9 x0 h

. v1 f% C3 h+ r& x% S3 @4 A7 zHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.' \% V7 ]6 v5 h

; G0 b% H: `1 ^9 C4 [1 jBoy, sometimes I was jealous." D+ E: _1 o- p, W1 F0 W- J- {. l1 h9 W
2 Z7 a5 _2 [3 q, T' x! Y
Today was one of those days.
; r2 `+ T+ a% {! G3 ~! y! ?8 Z+ U0 G3 ^1 b' v6 i' [3 Y
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.: H6 ^) R- H% Q+ F: t  A; `

0 q9 k8 H" B3 m4 j: NSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"! E3 q: ]. C  M: S3 _7 [

6 c' L! `* F/ B) |+ r  Z: f# lHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.3 N! M# E8 H. I9 f3 y

. D9 q* n$ L$ V( o"Thanks," he said.
8 Q; Q8 i  F, e
& j3 j" r& r9 P8 C* LAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began0 J; A! y& |. N4 i, q
8 S* u% L; p* `" B7 i
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
+ ]" J' q) ?1 ]( _" B4 L7 x# G: p# m0 Y$ |& t
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
  U) r1 O8 g6 x) ~
( N# A5 D' J/ YI am here to tell all of you that being a. U# T" f- ^" l0 ^/ X
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.  ~- d/ U" D8 {0 M4 }
) k0 C/ g6 d1 _4 V
I am going to tell you a story."
. |2 m$ S% X2 M( N+ _) u( ?6 d3 f7 x8 \: J/ T* L
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.+ E* k( Q/ [" E; u6 c" V: p0 e

4 P, N& n6 \2 k4 t' }  B! GHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
3 Y% `9 }6 z6 T! W
" W- r2 z2 C4 [3 ~) _He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
5 |) Z2 S2 [. J7 m3 ^
2 O! I0 p5 V  D( o' _He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.6 l  f8 N' h9 c) b7 J

* ^, Q9 M% a' f& M* Z"Thankfully, I was saved.
: r  O3 s5 j+ `& ~$ V( e- V; O% p0 Y! g7 ^1 ?* K! u2 A: I2 ]% m2 p
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."; ^: g+ g: o* P- R- n! g
' H% `+ C, H* F' \$ [
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
1 W& p, O9 |8 S! d* g
! q  Y- _' r7 i- rI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
2 v' k1 N2 d. |$ i! ^' B, |4 g7 @! A0 s  H$ @  n4 \, }4 {8 e1 V$ @( Z
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth., g+ F# t& W6 Y1 u1 J8 w/ H$ Q
2 s, i: g  L6 R- ^
Never underestimate the power of your actions." H* ]8 F7 S9 A. h

6 J6 Y. z' z1 _  A* L2 @8 [5 `) y/ sWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
5 \" ^* \2 y: i! E1 ~
- R8 m$ @4 @& F& O9 s  ]' j" bFor better or for worse.
- L9 ~+ c8 W7 i
; j- R4 ~% T+ _$ KGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
+ Y- w# ~: \! {& h- J, W
  c/ _" E' X+ E; o8 S. vLook for God in others.( D" H* T, z4 c/ O
3 j+ C/ b) B! I# S  o
You now have two choices, you can:
( ^" @( d+ \$ R
7 `( I0 I7 D2 L7 [6 a& R- u1) Pass this on to your friends or
3 x) q; j) k& L/ ^7 S# B* M0 R4 S/ X$ H0 m5 [
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.3 ^& h' a' f% {( C
8 C2 C! N/ {, A: E# o! T& B! E
As you can see, I took choice number 1.
4 n' h  B. W0 Q3 i. V9 q0 J"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.") f7 p' R5 b1 W9 i6 G
8 Z6 b# N' F+ u
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.. {7 l8 U+ ^" G- m+ \+ t
  l- ~5 h5 O8 [; U+ ]" d8 w& C
Tomorrow is mystery.6 a! P$ y  W- ^6 X& B: E5 v% A

% F+ Q, r- Q5 M5 L1 C9 b% DToday is a gift.! b. t5 l: J7 U* j3 a

$ a, I' g4 j1 e. fIt's National Friendship Week. Show your friends how much you care. Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND.

) |  K+ W' r1 a# S8 x7 V4 dIf it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a circle of friends.
