谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语

7 Z4 P7 D- o& u" O* b
7 j9 s' M4 P* k6 _在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯+ v$ A: ?) n1 V7 `" l
之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。& B) Z9 D+ g& K
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!
; w' A+ P) ]9 F- H/ j3 B2 N% x9 X" K- A
(1) empty suit:' o2 l$ O. a/ p) s  m$ b
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。
% t8 I# {. `; F& ~$ t( A(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
- i* V' S2 j9 y8 `/ `+ V例如:2 q% O+ W0 q0 h( T
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.
6 m+ m0 }9 A9 ]7 I! l2 R2 p(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)1 g/ e) @2 k3 k8 Q, S4 ^/ m! M
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.% w. }2 |( F3 H* G2 d9 o
(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
5 d8 T- p- J0 @5 W虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:6 ]5 j1 u+ t* K+ Y0 w
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.7 X8 I0 r5 v) R. z
(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)8 F0 y& W+ n9 ?
(2) fair-haired boy:
" e0 q) [, j' k8 O指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man); e9 @. }. R; f3 P# S! u( ~
(通常用单数,当名词用)3 _8 f' x% l+ R
例如:, K, I4 v6 o4 F2 q
Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.
4 z$ \/ j9 R5 l8 }1 r( e( f( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
) P/ `3 h/ d' _- o: y  sNot being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.% R; i* m5 j+ J) o. @- F% o
(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)) x7 c, F. g+ B: N' D
有时也可用复数:
+ S2 I; _3 G2 z& h: n' ~Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
( l8 Y9 T+ i4 \! o$ \; S$ J, Z(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
( C, M  B8 {# @# o( ]' A: D- r* BFair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
* Z7 t2 t# ~( s6 \5 c: N( N(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
- T2 W# P6 Y. B1 r9 [(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)6 Q& Q+ p8 N/ w+ `
(3) fishing expedition:
5 B. k. _  A1 |# L7 i; P为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)# G: P$ v( r6 H
(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)9 x3 T0 G1 {5 c9 m; O
例如:
7 v6 ~) J- ]/ SThe judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
( x% f8 F* Q9 X: Z- [(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)1 n7 j/ k3 t/ v7 D0 J
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.
) w4 j* T: U3 h6 I+ T5 E( j(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)5 `% @6 u  v+ f4 N
(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict); P  p  R7 {( c
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
2 L4 i2 x2 Y/ x) a% V(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)& R1 n) S- ^1 Z: s; a) t, N+ z
偶尔也有人用复数:" y) m) Q7 w; N$ f/ r* G, M1 c
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
, D' p8 U( w4 N6 r( R# r, x(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)
/ p2 G% D; |' L% r  _+ C+ e(4) filthy rich:" d4 [+ r" b) ]7 L
意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy): z. f2 I; F& Z- u) K
(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
4 w! {$ a; I0 n1 F- M多半当形容词用。例如:5 t& q7 u8 z0 m3 K6 W5 i8 z
With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich./ a; L2 }& R9 k  b9 K  q
( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)0 W7 U8 u5 b4 L* U6 r4 N1 x
Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.% V% J" l# w( }# ~! c" v
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。): z- i% H' X9 e8 A: j/ h! E
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
9 G+ J; ]9 |3 x9 F(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)6 l9 t( L! c6 F% j8 V* T
Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.
" u- V5 e7 ^! w; [/ b$ k(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)- b7 ]/ o4 P; S. f
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)
$ `6 R' `9 d; U# Z- h. w3 R(5) fairy godmother:: E3 |0 J2 z. |! b/ _( K1 y
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
) E6 i4 k3 Q/ e: ^2 C4 O0 u) w(多半指有钱的女人)) Q) N: C- f/ Y7 K1 |/ [
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:
. D+ c1 J% G. p% h& _; C, i9 `) c; cMr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.
; k1 w/ G9 J, o" i7 o(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
2 U$ P1 \$ R' G. V$ F' qAfter lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.
  b3 }8 b& T& t2 ]) {" j& w( D(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
4 J: {, ^$ S! t7 |9 M5 Y有时也用复数:% w/ u' @1 c% e% {
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.
6 f* j" `8 n6 C6 m2 ?1 {% j(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
% G9 E0 D6 x" v5 ~/ {  J4 WIn Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered., I0 d4 F8 j" C
(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。). H  F* S5 I' d  P% r0 ?+ ^

- P- b. _5 ^5 N% U6)eye opener:" B3 Y! M/ p: V* |) L* K  k
指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)9 U. }8 }6 e" J- ~' d! u8 I( u
(当名词用;通常只用单数)" Q# x6 z- L3 j" z- E; s8 {& K  E
例如:
* @, o+ z8 r8 k, j( q: MYour wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.
( H# p& t7 l; {3 r(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)2 ?# O  V9 q6 X$ z/ N
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.. q* J$ g" T: A1 r% u+ d( V7 f
(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
0 A- f  O5 k8 a9 u& n$ NThe popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.
9 Y5 Y& h$ q+ |+ A: p& [; d/ V4 a' Z3 p6 t(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)% q% t& S* J! Y; Q- l% c
Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.$ Q: w2 U6 U: D& ?' E# ~
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)
( T- G; `% ~1 e) U* ^(7) hot dog:- x8 g$ N5 M9 k6 O7 s4 T# P
指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)+ q: h, A' X4 k9 u
例如:* A: A; b5 C! U5 o+ v9 K
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.
4 ~6 P) q( M$ x% V5 T(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)0 o1 t3 }9 l- u  G" }" T
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)5 v9 X/ Y9 V( [3 ?. s7 @7 H& W$ ]
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
! u: v' r: u* C( @; v8 X(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)4 S/ h, q' b- S* r$ A" Y% }
(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)! Q2 x9 Q& f; ?- ]: Y( j% i
During the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.
; X0 v2 B9 Y8 H8 O; O(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)
/ x" e8 o& X! m" P也指真正的热狗食物:. H9 D$ r1 G0 g2 P! v
The hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.
6 t/ n" d. B& \! L' J(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)
4 Y) F3 [% y! I6 t2 a, s也可表达欣赏的心情:$ I0 X1 _) m# l
Hot dog ! What great news for me.

(8)eager beaver:# w: M9 I# E" c" _  ]
指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others): H; u+ w, o' ~9 b
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)3 S. `3 i8 s: K, ]3 u0 P. U
(当名词用,可指男女)0 p  l( V2 G2 i" G! s! G0 {
例如:
6 J: s7 ^/ l, ]1 w7 V1 yJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
% }8 y* E0 }  E3 @(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)
' j5 F) e, f, V- z* O4 z/ l7 SBeing an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.
3 s4 x; r; l, N. H(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)# S0 [, P! K) ]0 E
Does Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?- ?  R+ K  n" N) _; v- N% ~
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
- l. _9 {( o" f. }  k- dYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
' m( Q' c" |: \  j& G(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
  k, J" N# L4 U+ T( G  v/ p5 k+ m( y(9)doubting Thomas:; r$ {9 M& N9 k+ X) }9 m) {
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)3 E" G7 X; q7 v7 l8 D
(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)
) P3 q0 I( D% M: A  Y; N(当名词用)' O; p& g2 ?) w+ |/ A( Z
例如:  Y! b% T! t5 F
I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.
5 y0 ?! p8 o* N; `(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
+ a! F  [* ]( q$ n8 qThere must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.+ y  E! |0 P) H; w7 j
(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)
/ Y, i* d* W0 g3 j; q, M也可用复数:
7 t: k  A" Q; w& ~My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.
! l# ]* b% s) i0 O  O(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)0 |/ X6 Y) ]8 _8 W6 x5 z. n+ l5 T
If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another., l& X9 z. m% p* y& E! y
(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)
8 `# ~" Z) t+ I" n(10)dragon lady:# V. S' [4 @7 Y  g
指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)4 L* f' x+ B- q" `! O
例如:
! W7 i  z; n$ x" u# S' N( GThe chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.9 k6 {) H- L" ^9 y
(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。); s! I9 d0 F, K! J
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.
' p0 ^0 l% {# o1 `3 |(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
# b! j5 _7 _2 Z/ `Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
) ]! J' l$ m( H* Z(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)7 J( T7 m: y/ {$ k
也可用复数:
/ r- Y" a* B- O+ [; B" Z0 q$ ]There may be many dragon ladies in our community.1 c7 o, ?* U9 d- I0 m, B( u& l
(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)* p! v+ u4 j  ^. A
注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
