question for shower pan?

please help me out:

8 c/ _0 X8 D) L% Cdoes a curb needed by code in building a mortar shower pan for a tile shower? the curb looks ugly and dangerous for older people.  i wonder if i can have a tile shower without the curb, only slop and glass panel to prevent water splash out.
