When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

While I was paying 340CAD/month for more than a year, I抦 paying

1 C6 g4 q+ z/ h4 G/ [/ f4 hincreases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international 5 B4 K" p* R9 H# C; ]
differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,
! I2 d# F0 f+ f% C+ J" ]the fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers
" W# T1 T$ d9 K& |7 H4 ]) Cand most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
n# B( t9 u" c" ~; [- sasked to look for a residence on open market.

While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
9 M9 u) F& V$ b" Z( hincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid - h! H' z- b5 A1 [9 c" O( |
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our 5 k; W+ R7 x8 O8 m/ s
admission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students 3 Q: W. [4 c; a* ?
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after
2 I, t- Z+ n1 h h# b4 R% Otuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just
3 J3 x+ {% |% H n5 z0 ~imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am
. S( H* M$ v) ]" n4 l. A: J# `( ]getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of : d+ i% S9 }0 o- F$ ]# A
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was # B) Q( ^, j/ L3 n6 s8 ?' a0 T1 y
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.

from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
) Y8 P7 F. D {6 ]- Ystudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.

My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
, L! \; B/ R# h; L; H& i. Ais to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and
5 S8 D0 r7 ]" Y6 u3 l0 Cespecially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
) J; E; L, } d% Q, D
! O3 _$ R0 [6 R$ C4 d* ~, iinitiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
+ S7 |0 N6 i' A1 ]' |graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?, r( M! L2 r: l# o) s3 S
