D/ c' R& D8 l D! c5 V; NGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. * P( ?) n- T) f( [

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

8 S( @4 Q- s6 l4 F' B2 P: U- ?3 rYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 8 V2 S9 P/ a* _
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 9 E& Q4 h9 Q. M8 _1 j p
news to report from that meeting.

" U5 N4 a0 ]* K& s9 h3 \: XFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
" ]; \" B1 I. L$ \# S; ]$ ~. U! `undergraduate international students from the increase to the & a- x) @/ m0 I9 E
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
2 X5 A2 b6 p% V' Sstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base k& n/ C- w5 y! e
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
3 D: m7 b- N; Y1 E+ L UAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase & i' ]; `; }3 c. O9 H
the differential for international graduate students.! _* l2 o! _( i8 |

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an $ i% r$ }# P1 V, t$ x) T5 \
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 4 r! J( c. l }$ _( r* x! T
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
J o A3 L/ n2 [# m7 n2 swill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
r* F( f3 j% G, Cleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
! m1 `) Z! n' Q3 O$ e% h! ? vtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
) u6 z) F2 R1 i) H* }2 i* ~increases once they are here.- {& j# R/ l* S8 @. X$ m: S3 \

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the S z" @( V) @3 o% q9 @! i) G0 a
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
