Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
+ k( ^, s/ ^+ {" bnews to report from that meeting./ P. C! j, @- |7 i* y: r
! y+ r9 u6 o! @3 c6 BFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
1 Y5 F, R- n( h/ s' V1 O Fundergraduate international students from the increase to the
! b% u9 K; R" H0 V9 N8 Ldifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
( o+ ]% y5 X& I1 S4 a( G; |+ Ustudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 9 k7 r# u7 {" \0 c5 S
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 6 h# \) Q) _7 P# j' R) u$ G1 U
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ; c. g) J3 [" h
the differential for international graduate students.- C: n, s% d) b& `6 j7 b& R
# f2 a6 `, w5 Y# V
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
4 X7 \" F2 @$ ~$ A+ \" M% yincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to / h `: Z: z9 K n+ ?
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
8 E" D. \4 z Fwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 8 C8 F2 b- F9 y4 }. u( l
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
! x1 f9 e+ t% `/ o. c8 m, ctuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
7 t9 t: I- ?! ?' o- Hincreases once they are here.6 S7 T) c# p5 j3 M% f

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 7 @5 |) W* T; E1 o# Y/ s
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I , }5 S M0 h- G
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
4 K6 v* V* s2 ~have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 7 @3 C' s& ? f* W4 R
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
