) X2 T) R" ]8 S. KGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 4 M2 D, L9 j3 k$ ]* R; p

+ f) r K3 @* b$ ~& J& j6 p4 y8 lYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
7 d0 g" L- l: }) U: _( g% eCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
4 \7 W4 ^( }9 snews to report from that meeting.
! A7 j- ^: E2 W, _6 n5 V( k& \5 e* {2 n. I7 q; K" C& w
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
% h; E) @' f8 q* t3 a& mundergraduate international students from the increase to the
: [1 u$ J) u7 D; p& O' |' Pdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
1 j# d5 p4 s& Y; k; ]! K) p" \( fstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base * _, b0 u7 N# Q- K4 Q' X0 _
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
. v; W! g; L) b$ jAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
5 L' _" P3 _2 V' \# p- L8 uthe differential for international graduate students.; W! W$ I. s: T
& M+ W- _ F0 t- A* W8 j
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an : l7 y1 [8 _3 v$ M# t6 L0 \2 v
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
' S- \9 F7 q4 b. p% B, U/ Y1 _220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students - f5 r) B% d; ~ g) f9 c( ]
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
6 C( m- [5 |( W; f9 @/ J6 sleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 2 i8 K) x. }3 m5 S Q7 m: @
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected $ P, ~7 W) U; o) d7 U
increases once they are here.

0 f1 g2 a& t; t5 I$ \7 _7 E- ninternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 5 @! l2 r* i X
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
