0 \ I6 ]7 E S- h$ J/ @6 [Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

" u- s+ x( @. \' i0 D( cYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
8 f4 E( X" X7 | S" u6 P" @Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
: M0 P* c! f7 b( [: K: vnews to report from that meeting.
5 L; p3 |. r% p) _0 X2 F) R( R' r9 S9 \6 _9 z$ P1 g0 I: q+ e. `
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
+ {/ ?8 B" x+ v. a$ rundergraduate international students from the increase to the
9 E% a2 V& T* F. Pdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international % l5 ?8 t+ w4 U( B; q
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
- ^& z# \* |( n, f2 G5 J$ Utuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
9 ]: G, q7 _# ~/ \: A! S+ SAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
* ^. r2 D; z7 n' }1 r, K1 ?: dthe differential for international graduate students.
" ]! o% s' [$ L& U
. x8 G; K* I0 X0 ~6 M5 G- tNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 4 C/ I, V* g/ o
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
/ w9 ~, X" h3 V5 G) l3 Z; I220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students # P7 |" M, _: z3 w0 X6 T
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
! |' |* E L4 j# Aleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
% C. v9 j/ H: |8 `! t; gtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ' P. J! M6 U" e8 B& {5 Z1 T$ D7 q# L
increases once they are here.- @- w3 |' d% @$ q. P
# u- A$ P- t0 `8 i0 mThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the ) \4 Y7 E6 K( A" ^' W! N7 T
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I * Z, D; U1 A1 T
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that " I1 i& _. o @" [" B
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 1 }1 a; k1 `5 K/ L( F
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 1 [1 I6 y+ o* }0 x
