EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.# z; M. T& K7 e

Edmonton's cooling market showed the biggest year-over-year drop of any Canadian city.

Compared to June, Edmonton new home prices nudged downward 0.2 per cent.

}% m4 Y& L$ h7 k0 U. YEven heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.+ i& V: a8 g; M9 K/ `, M

The fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.5 ^4 n. A' k& Y% @* [, N7 a

As the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.+ Z8 V+ c7 y& G( a U0 Q* m" `& ]

Prices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.& v$ p, X& G/ y& F( l: s* q/ X

"The growth rate of the index has been on a downward trend since September 2006," the agency said.
