EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

Compared to June, Edmonton new home prices nudged downward 0.2 per cent.

Calgary saw a 0.3 per cent slide compared to July of last year.

"Markets in these cities continue to adjust after experiencing record price increases in the last two and a half years," the federal agency said.

( @. Y6 b8 T V' }! f2 V1 DEven heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.$ u, x7 O6 D+ _# }% p# C
! C- E; o$ ~$ [The fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.* Q5 y' I# M7 t+ D, X

As the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.

# C% j' Z# v. V7 f( K. cPrices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.

"The growth rate of the index has been on a downward trend since September 2006," the agency said.
