EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.1 b) `0 R% e( i8 v/ l

"Markets in these cities continue to adjust after experiencing record price increases in the last two and a half years," the federal agency said.4 ^: ~9 ~/ @4 |+ s- p

Even heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.5 W) Z# P* ?2 i
1 O) }% M' M, [* uThe fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.

9 V% m+ B' A w( A, ?9 U4 DAs the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.

* r9 b; ^8 }8 o, B- y- M2 D) cPrices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.

"The growth rate of the index has been on a downward trend since September 2006," the agency said.
