Edmonton police are investigating two killings from early Sunday morning, the city's 20th and 21st homicides of the year.

In the first incident, a 30-year-old man is dead in what police are calling a "gang motivated" shooting near Whitemud Drive, the Edmonton Police Service said in a press release.

4 _, A0 f$ \' k0 AAt approximately 2:20 a.m. MT, the EPS responded to a call of shots fired at a silver Infiniti near a Whitemud Drive overpass at 170th Street.

One male passenger fled from the vehicle before police arrived, and reports indicate a small white car was seen fleeing the scene after the shots were fired.! P6 v6 y% i, a4 K, ]

The circumstances leading up to the shooting are still under investigation, but police believe the incident is not random and is likely gang-related.

Meanwhile, one male is dead and another is in police custody after an altercation between two groups in an alley early Sunday morning, according to an EPS press release./ ] [- c1 Y9 B. ~7 a4 \

At approximately 2:45 a.m. MT, officers spotted a vehicle being driven the wrong way on Gateway Boulevard near Whyte Avenue.

6 M4 n4 s9 ^- ^1 FUpon stopping the car, the officers learned that one of the passengers, a 24-year-old male, was seriously injured.& t. H" Q: s0 C. w
: `% o5 ^! X% X; K# C+ ?* U
He was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

A police investigation revealed that the three male occupants of the vehicle had been involved in a physical altercation with two other males and a female near an alley south of Whyte Avenue, between Gateway Boulevard and Calgary Trail, which resulted in one male being stabbed.
