Master Composter/Recycler Program / Free!

Dear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the
; E! Y i4 D0 P" }! VMaster Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule
4 o+ a/ Z/ z7 m6 D4 |) h, o(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about
# z2 n$ A, x: J2 G, kenvironmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste9 [ K) I- W! U$ f# L
management; home composting; household hazardous waste;
) N8 \8 o! q5 N+ |vermin-composting and residential recycling.
+ g5 r& ^/ q# W2 T* m- W0 o& b
& [9 q3 Y. J! y4 J2 h3 ^4 E0 TThis course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips
+ o$ l4 c3 c" a: p( {to various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates x( F3 v" [7 `) q# ^# U. {
complete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:
& O% m; Z6 b2 O% xreduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important/ Z( j# ~* s+ {, g8 W7 r s
resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the
3 k: R: a' H; } c2 {8 X( @importance of composting and recycling.
/ [0 A9 I) x4 M5 d/ o- D, x: @. L# ^8 Q! g9 |
Examples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the9 N) U+ x/ n+ r! o, L
Reuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;
; S6 V, i# G4 T }2 P- Q) zpublic education display booths; assisting with programs and4 d1 j: |& g$ \) @- }
maintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at
; u' m0 t j/ S2 Z: bvarious demonstration gardens and general public and school
@( z% J9 R1 u I: Npresentations.

8 z! u' ~4 l2 P! A cThere are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and M% X7 x( O8 ]. R$ \ W' _8 h
volunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the
7 W* \2 W3 n0 |5 D% }) V" y. I- j3 }% ~most. Curious about recycling and composting and sharing your. ^ D3 S! W* m( X5 v7 X
knowledge with others, then apply to become a Master

Course Dates: April 14 - May 2nd, 2009 -Tuesday and Thursday evenings
