Edmonton's population grows by 30,000* {) A# r( c2 Z Q* k7 i3 |( Q E

4 y2 S1 S' Y: \3 C9 x$ U: U+ d h7 HEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

/ |9 X1 z3 t% \7 A1 v1 eThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.5 {4 M t# p: c) P# F
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
& f2 H7 p' s) d/ W7 |2 b8 H. @"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
# i1 x% p3 J1 ?! D* M9 kEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
4 j/ t3 x' v t/ ~( t3 XThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
