The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
; ~% ` \! u" A5 cRoles and Functions: E c" |5 n- N7 P( `
The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the9 u- q" p' d5 I3 D1 H
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
) `/ ]: o) I$ [) ~3 B# j2 Zoperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
$ P: B& n4 k+ J5 l; Y7 zthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
/ z9 j4 ?3 K5 L% f+ woperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular# Z: o$ d/ S, q1 ^4 W2 b* h
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is6 t( B }4 R: T. R
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an p5 _: D4 |: k2 L) N: ?
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires4 X: @. ]- A" W: X" H
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
; F/ F3 Q& {" e V8 [all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.8 Q! F3 r2 T. e! S6 Y2 ` W# n

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:% D$ I6 G" R. k
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the0 w( W3 x! Z- ~3 n9 H/ M" g5 b
officers of the Coalition! o1 X }/ g3 m7 j, s* i2 ?
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
" e9 F4 Q6 r$ Horganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations/ N+ @5 T: {6 N! Y, _4 V4 R' n' B
and public institutions
/ j% L) C( q* E, B' `3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through0 b& U6 w4 v3 Y8 ]0 P) k
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives- r! }/ j, K9 s/ t: w9 B/ U6 ?$ r1 R
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
+ B' E$ q& [% {- `# n, w+ \organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with" ^& `/ F% {) y/ ]

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

& ]$ s! G- l ^8 A& @% e/ h$ `( r0 oAdministrative responsibilities:
/ M) J2 z: W; }* E7 |1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
/ H& @$ Y, c& O- w8 n% t" y4 lregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
$ r2 F1 b" W" [6 k3 r6 r3 gdirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the3 p2 G- Y: n, e$ }/ @
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
: {) p) Q/ W4 S1 F3 F- z2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the, g3 t$ F, J" u* \$ v# s

& T: X) p. h+ i. W" |! @8 J) }9 mRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board3 I7 [& r( [- T' G& m" G
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to2 |3 {1 H/ z2 }4 Q2 m( F S! c
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating/ [7 ?$ U- ~/ ]4 ]# p0 J$ O9 X
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
% a: J3 `/ y0 W" IThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
x8 [8 k2 m7 J8 |, a8 T* Paims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should: H1 B4 S: R6 d# z8 c- L# B
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
3 c! k5 N% N5 Dparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and) j4 B T$ t8 k; L# m9 D( `/ o
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of$ G" b& P1 q& {' Y, E* ?
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
8 V7 f! D6 @; ~* \statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all3 X6 k u8 A3 T* L, o/ x
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
# Y6 k- n t- F5 Y8 Ndirectors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of3 ^0 P; {4 x' M! ?& F" Y' w' a
policies already adopted

3. Experience in writing grant proposals and accessing funding
