Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
7 k1 W# O6 `$ O% S# Sinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
! b- c- U0 N3 h( @. ~3 [5 f: _carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture.  We will be
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
4 }7 Q% Z( `0 y) _9 I; L7 ^: Uinvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
market forces to prevail.
% Z3 T) u/ r+ U" d
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
: b- d$ j# s- R1 B4 Q6 i& [: ychosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
0 o0 G/ V8 C7 n+ ]/ T( a$ L; o- Xnumber of Canadians.  Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in

. u* K. e7 v4 b8 Q3 scompetition among internet service providers.  I will be recommending that
