for Internet services. It is essential that I hear the views of Canadians

that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet. x# p$ O$ n! V4 t7 D" |

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
6 o% I7 D6 q% X* X. l! m2 D$ Fan increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving% ~0 w r3 U: r3 J9 [
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops. B: B8 h( ^/ T9 b$ |) b f
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look j1 R+ w y/ h8 T( Q
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
# X# w0 K b* p$ Y0 ~5 E( v; [3 Eguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and0 y/ x: ~$ f6 X( H
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
4 `/ q8 {2 D- |6 S u* w2 P% t6 L. mmarket forces to prevail. 4 L! s, g3 j) K1 m& i, m& v+ Z
; x6 W8 K* q( V( o% l0 e, n
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has9 x$ x. ~) I# W
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
. x% m7 F/ o" i" Z% onumber of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the* P/ ^* W6 s, t
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
) T4 N7 t. O$ K% cline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
+ x, _. m* B; E8 k- K+ Dcompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
: F8 M0 I, l7 o2 Q: s* |any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed. o1 ^+ y: W. w7 `5 ?/ o
