it all depand on what you want. a diamond ring can be broken down into the following 4 categories:

if you want a very high clarity and colour, then $10K CAD may only get you a 0.5 ct diamond if you don't care as much about colour and clarity, then you can easily get a 1.0 ct or bigger ring. typically, girls care more about the clarity and size. # q' }. \% V4 _' J( k
) M* O8 J6 c6 Dthe cutting of the diamond is also very important. a well cut 0.5 ct diamond may look as big or maybe even bigger on surface than a 1.0 ct diamond if it wasn't cut properly. & T5 d( z4 m7 O/ z! \% @% R" S
, v# Z- t) _; Sthe solitary princess diamond is the most popular style for an engagement ring. solitaty means a single large diamond (not a whole bunch of small diamonds or dusts but with the total weight added to a 1.0 ct) and princess means it's cut into a round shape on top (not square or oval shape). i- E; L9 m8 T9 Y
7 J0 k5 f+ U7 E. }the band (ring itself) can be found in white gold 14K or 18K. typically, the better the diamond, the better band it comes with. ie <$5000 ring usually comes with a 14K band but >$5000 ring will come with a 18K band.
