it all depand on what you want. a diamond ring can be broken down into the following 4 categories:
; ~7 z' U1 p# N9 c* t
1 e' v6 R7 A. r D2 }( m% Jsize
7 D" I7 s# W" X0 S- L t* Dcolour
) u% s. b# p& G! l9 kclarity
3 m; _: _" k! O" _, z% \1 qcut3 h8 b. J$ v( f: z4 `
) Y4 M' v3 J9 b) }0 W2 c
if you want a very high clarity and colour, then $10K CAD may only get you a 0.5 ct diamond if you don't care as much about colour and clarity, then you can easily get a 1.0 ct or bigger ring. typically, girls care more about the clarity and size. 8 A+ D/ n1 L& r$ X; r L
. ~8 I/ c9 v% h- @/ nthe cutting of the diamond is also very important. a well cut 0.5 ct diamond may look as big or maybe even bigger on surface than a 1.0 ct diamond if it wasn't cut properly. 1 {) g6 k2 f* v4 j" Z, F! y7 R: u
4 A" J2 y. B) ithe solitary princess diamond is the most popular style for an engagement ring. solitaty means a single large diamond (not a whole bunch of small diamonds or dusts but with the total weight added to a 1.0 ct) and princess means it's cut into a round shape on top (not square or oval shape)

4 e6 G3 F) \- o, Wthe band (ring itself) can be found in white gold 14K or 18K. typically, the better the diamond, the better band it comes with. ie <$5000 ring usually comes with a 14K band but >$5000 ring will come with a 18K band. ' t2 r2 ]/ @4 k1 m4 X. G
