You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
# s' D+ t+ J" a) m  f  R2 O$ x3 y8 ~7 N
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
- Y/ j! w4 c. a8 R3 X9 j0 M7 ^" `' p& m; A; K* j& {. G; r$ `' o
His name was Kyle.0 A8 G5 ?8 H' `6 Z8 ?

/ x5 }0 A7 ^* Q# u0 BIt looked like he was carrying all of his
% ]2 D, K: [1 @! j3 CBooks.- @' C7 d3 j/ B4 C2 W6 ^. y1 D0 \8 b

& A2 |: t3 ?5 FI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?, U0 G" W: {; r
3 N3 o- u$ m$ |6 J8 p* m
He must really be a nerd.") v. s" q* H/ }8 n9 J8 F! T
/ d5 Z5 ^8 E& l
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.* F4 Y. w1 |2 R2 i, M* q

' {( `; u! C9 c7 u6 N& uAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.0 J$ z& J" j, s* a
) E$ Q8 J. Q7 ?8 S4 w
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
7 U% K; L1 |" S9 k% z# b, R3 Y
1 }- l  x; g8 A/ }3 uHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
7 t( s8 _; k. \' w6 T5 u9 \, \/ L; [- B, n  `' m
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
+ ^0 L- n+ M" G: A; M/ c7 A9 h2 l3 O9 ]' s  s
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.' d5 n: y3 i% [" y; o- b' D
# k! i$ _0 U" ]* o( [& N( E
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.' G5 I9 Z# l2 |/ I3 ^
. |* W9 B8 R1 m3 p
They really should get lives.2 t( M! s, P8 ?

- M' ?3 g! L; N+ |+ e- q& R" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"+ Q8 }+ y& E' }4 H, V
9 I& P. v9 q9 @7 n! Y
There was a big smile on his face.
+ t3 ~- C+ u; D5 W  ~2 [
& n$ p$ f8 U) \$ C0 D7 WIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.% m) \* F, L: z) z- ]9 t
- @( ]% ?2 X8 k! z; G
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.. H/ F8 o/ S+ J) G

- ?- Z; x; f, G9 GAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
) S3 _# U! j7 H1 d# @0 A3 t# {3 Z, M
He said he had gone to private school before now., |  t+ U8 x( v, _0 |. ^- d% f" s' [4 y

: y7 n, g1 l- t6 yI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
3 U- b* f; D. p4 Z
5 q: V' [+ [. u% Z( qWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
: v# x' `2 D$ ^( u7 ^$ P# P7 w) n: c* L0 y# }% s; Y+ d6 @* ^
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.& v. a3 d, N6 \' L' }

* _6 t% b+ a# C/ Q* c8 o3 dI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
6 |; }! ]4 ~% A* q; X
7 ?+ k, q5 }; d- W0 _& k3 AHe said yes.
" |8 G& [7 @5 u# q* `- @" ?) W* ?% z% `
* f& S9 }8 A* ^2 w. iWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.& K9 I  U7 A. L6 K3 P3 E

. r5 q+ r( E4 I7 tMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.; Y; r2 g* p5 h
4 B) I2 l+ {" E
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!' I3 v# r8 t" I- `! ]; M, f
4 i; \* S) }" I* S
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
7 L& v" A( s" Q* q8 e
, i$ \- K# L% b9 \Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.- ?8 U' @+ k% {$ B! z$ b

8 H6 d. @; P6 |3 t) u+ V( t; e1 rWhen we were seniors, we began to think( D7 n4 ^* L8 A: h
About college.( F1 u% d! ^8 M6 U1 G8 N: L

# {6 M/ l& B3 N/ B) d9 B0 d" B& \Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I: `% A9 }: ~* Q+ s' u
Was going to Duke.; e3 W7 J) ?, W- i" ?; p# H: B
/ w. R, H8 C& N  o& O# C) {9 V8 j
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.3 }; {2 n1 {/ B  z

& t9 m" o+ H( z/ tHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.$ x; N& _# ]$ D

5 i( s2 V$ M3 T- S$ _' W9 F% M# cKyle was valedictorian of our class.5 j3 B$ G+ r, d) v
+ |3 e: u9 b$ k6 }- t
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
0 N) s4 S, @: x5 z4 R8 o; P2 T7 {: A. y7 X* g+ w
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
; Q) }6 Z& L0 Y5 F* C. V
& D* E2 H0 e( Z: |I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak2 Z5 O5 f  I3 I0 K" K& M) ^
" Y$ R8 n8 R! }( t2 q8 r
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.4 ]' N: K1 {3 W# Z' @$ f
/ A9 X2 I7 O5 X8 f' Q# P1 s
He looked great.
) G1 u4 Q9 G, J9 t  U: {# U5 F0 b. P6 x2 z9 }5 r: D
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
: M! Y/ @- P5 I+ L- C# h0 j1 @" v7 @1 o$ [* P7 {) f; V! z, Z3 ~
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses., D" B, m$ u7 T
: k# J+ J5 y3 h6 m5 ?4 B2 l
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.5 g% S( ?) h+ H7 v3 x8 G4 E

  N) S  |+ R3 a% {Boy, sometimes I was jealous." J+ L, g) R3 {) m' R- J" G9 q
5 ^) g( z6 W! U6 b# w) M) K
Today was one of those days.
) x7 ]7 L& a7 ]3 \
# {' n  p2 V. B" u) m# h0 nI could see that he was nervous about his speech.
/ M  v( [  _+ N, ?3 T7 Z+ C( A  g8 P4 U) y+ C( g' E  H$ |
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"# X. ~5 c- S- a& Q

( r; z9 B& \% D1 m# h- l- EHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
, Q# }/ d" h& v' X9 k( S8 A7 N, G4 l4 F
"Thanks," he said.
# }" i4 F! l" B: m
; ~; D) c3 X, pAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
" h4 H( j  }& J# b# R& y! C4 q; `& P9 M
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
2 q+ E( O+ B+ t0 v8 K, _
# [- p. s& Q4 z; s: i% A. g* A) EYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
( b( H8 a, b: [, W, {$ R3 c! {7 m* x& T& e" J( P% C- F
I am here to tell all of you that being a
" b$ i$ o4 S2 Y( f% f1 WFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
' Y6 H; D6 y# v, n) ]: Y
% w9 N7 J4 L3 Q3 _1 o/ iI am going to tell you a story."2 s2 Y- m4 \0 I% i9 J
9 w7 |& l, J2 M' b! V
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.( k. t0 R8 I: B% l8 `! U

6 I/ Y1 c6 j; _4 K3 w3 [He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.8 h% k8 |- A5 E# R8 V/ W
& N( Z7 T* R8 O( A. S
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
; H0 Q1 N; b7 i: I: M( F) V1 ~* [2 m, T" O7 g, J1 o- Z8 d3 [
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
2 X2 S( n( x  R1 T7 p( R" L( J
3 b, A" D/ c4 v0 Q"Thankfully, I was saved.) [. P- [9 Q6 e* H8 E
6 @( N7 `, u( o0 G( Q) C+ }
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."6 p7 @/ m0 `1 y8 t9 E! B7 J+ i

% x7 ]1 o; I* CI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment./ {. k) n  n9 |3 B1 h$ x
9 c& d& G+ M  k7 |# E
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.) X* l8 Y' W, x) \* |
/ L( o$ X+ l% M# l
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
, E6 a9 U7 d$ \) b. t3 ~) c4 g
( z8 r2 n. t( s2 [1 W  u) iNever underestimate the power of your actions.- Z. L7 d8 a) i/ [$ k  }9 ~- T
3 N- H+ k* X3 B. e) r" x. J, M7 g
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.. l* s/ q& d" g+ k* }( P

+ B9 F+ h7 F8 Q5 x& sFor better or for worse.
- U+ W7 M3 D$ Q7 c" K/ u5 h" A  V: F( [4 `
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.3 {. L+ G* p4 V7 s! W1 y

% D) f  U6 W# T* KLook for God in others.
9 F: o; q2 a  J; |9 \$ {* X# R( ~
You now have two choices, you can:
. w! m' A, Z0 b; @
  g4 K% C) K1 U1 M) t6 A7 ?1) Pass this on to your friends or
4 [: l7 Q' j! j$ F* P. l# z5 w0 ^  {7 ^( b/ Y5 e6 M. t! N! E
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
! x. L1 V5 @, \; Z3 D+ r9 q# Z* ?, k  I( @0 M/ g5 _
As you can see, I took choice number 1./ R+ G0 e5 I" _/ q5 Q' _
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
; G8 h) r2 r' O( g" U* o4 [$ v
4 z8 A" c6 S4 W+ p2 jThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.5 O! f- t/ M$ ^' S& X3 ]4 q

) S- s$ z3 R% `; g' mTomorrow is mystery.

* T6 e  w( [, v! v, x1 g8 @8 OToday is a gift.8 k6 |* l0 ]) M! Y5 L" p" j, g8 E1 t
/ ?5 h) \$ B# D5 [. {, Y" z
