You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
4 I( j2 F6 o! O$ Y9 J2 ?
5 D, ^. B2 {. z, kI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
$ h: k: W$ }) c2 o% E6 T/ B# U# Y) C
- z6 i. _/ i/ e4 j6 h8 @His name was Kyle.
5 @; v* ?( [0 Y# o1 b6 O( G4 }' K
: ]- x7 p- _7 c/ KIt looked like he was carrying all of his
0 p( t" O; J# F4 f0 cBooks.& \( D. v& e) `" g1 F. Z) M6 c

! U! x: z/ x4 L; l) O! V/ SI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
8 h# Y; M8 I* H0 |3 l
5 P3 k5 u4 q' u$ YHe must really be a nerd."
9 O* W  `% C2 O. n1 Z0 o) V% i  P: Y" e1 h& O8 i
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
* L5 J! j2 o. Y' I& i
3 r% n8 v/ T4 C7 YAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
, ^* P! |0 x1 a# l/ d* h7 V- p' M
/ E8 T, [# @2 g: Z; oThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
: ]6 A! N5 R) n. d$ m; ?- Y. _
0 t2 \5 ^% ~& {' l; Y. `5 x6 F& T+ q% _His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.' c. z# w3 `; m% w# C

8 i  M. a/ ~8 w; {/ @, O5 iHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
  [) y$ Z- l  m3 ~# j1 F/ f; t: {6 S' R9 \4 x. ~
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.9 L0 Y( z; ^  ]: \! {8 z

. I& J( l& k- W  P9 x9 ?/ yAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.; C( g4 X0 r/ L# ~+ ^! J
; @* N( p! @% `5 |( f  c+ [
They really should get lives.0 Z5 h6 G, p$ p4 ^/ G. K7 {- U( t3 Q

, `& F0 Y5 b0 W9 Z0 C/ |" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"! J  Y' V* M/ T- J7 x. w
0 ~  L/ p- D4 `- k( B) R
There was a big smile on his face.7 s& Y6 \, w5 J3 ^# J1 l; h. v

# ^5 G" R2 J' v7 ~* v2 x2 w) Y8 V7 mIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
% R! T, ^6 X0 f8 M6 E0 g+ {" j4 j. T: K' R; h; Q
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.$ a* @$ b) ]; ~% K3 K" E# J& ~  K

4 P1 }+ {' l8 I& _! k0 ^As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
7 E; B$ p" \, l3 P7 U1 N* r6 K5 P0 K
8 g# ^2 e4 l7 U8 g3 CHe said he had gone to private school before now.- Q/ g9 _* P8 b" E; f

# P: O, Y5 ~% U6 ?* `# n& QI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
6 C5 @' D2 l. ]8 M# U' T, ~% `* Y/ _& n) N: D  L
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
' m+ T. ?) z9 R0 ^; i$ i; ?8 m9 U9 `: ?5 B2 F' \0 r8 Y$ `7 L
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid." B$ E+ @; u3 |( E  ]& B" C
8 i- v3 C) u% x- l- B& e
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.2 o9 U. F4 N. B3 A# \

; ]" h4 [- q( o1 D1 tHe said yes.
' A: f5 c4 T9 G' G4 X& q. t5 b5 C9 r# x0 x
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.5 C; D5 q2 B2 e3 t- p3 Q, i2 a

! e  O! @2 H  Q2 [$ s  p+ j( CMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again./ o- G5 _8 M' }  {

- v) b8 P# C* e# KI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
. F# N1 l; m. Z: n: s# P" o
. v$ b) i: }$ |' S0 d, \" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
& A& i3 i5 n( [! [+ @
+ n5 _, w$ p0 N1 c4 L7 N, vOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends." J' k( Y5 D* {( H& ^

  ]4 G; S; \  o/ A& ]  j3 iWhen we were seniors, we began to think6 r+ S. X# p- R5 q5 e4 p; F6 ~; w8 h
About college.) ^+ f4 t5 A0 I3 i0 z8 ]
5 V7 m' {! V! I! K3 V6 X+ `8 f
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
4 H# Y: S! t/ TWas going to Duke.
# |% q, d( R0 k, a; b9 L. d( W
/ X) |3 P" R2 t2 r. h. PI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.+ F; V& \. ]+ W" m- V) ^
. [, t2 _* H0 @. O
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.% O% j% q6 L  f( J0 A! _; {% \

* p* N, Q& }" RKyle was valedictorian of our class.9 ]4 I# q) n; a& r4 I% }

2 T' [6 s( Z. k' y9 `2 nI teased him all the time about being a nerd.! F+ ^5 _, }. W9 w7 p4 Q' u# {( m. v' g
$ n) f0 O- i# g! Z
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.5 @' L6 X' b) x/ X+ v! Q
- b* x$ d% Z; a2 w% e
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak& a2 u) G* x& \7 S+ Q& Y

0 J7 p0 C- H/ ^) q- }Graduation day, I saw Kyle.% \/ G( m* m2 z- }* a2 [& f# Z
) e7 {. F* R3 ?) r
He looked great.0 p0 ^# R7 S# d$ s/ C' V: D2 M
6 T4 N$ g5 D; K( n$ F
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
9 l" s+ Y/ x4 w7 f+ R
- N6 `- q0 o. C: AHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.( H* C" o0 D+ ]: v9 O# i/ S" a+ _8 V

7 \! B+ w! ~2 l- EHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
; u- l; o0 `# J' C5 O0 L
) R( B1 c2 _9 i9 V4 m2 LBoy, sometimes I was jealous.
- |- h1 ?$ K- T7 J9 f6 _+ v- k1 I( J
Today was one of those days.
3 t. Q% n+ C, b& G2 G+ m$ X; I0 D3 _8 t
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
7 B  f; D( ?5 K
8 J  n  E4 l3 ?So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
' T& w8 _+ @7 d' K# X  u. [  j" Y1 e0 D* y
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.3 ^5 l' h1 @) }% n! X2 [2 s

+ [9 n2 Y: t3 b( F- I1 l"Thanks," he said.
; C0 n) C+ ~# C- g* A9 I+ q
0 |& {# w" H" JAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
2 ~+ ^( a. L% {% c
. Q( t3 q- j" Z% @5 ]; u6 Y% X1 U; R"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
2 P+ j  L, \3 S% c& d& N% a+ W+ E2 I& K# I; e* {5 X) o6 v
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...8 u" ~+ [* y  M( L0 M. r$ f% c0 D! |$ _
( `9 [" J  T. N
I am here to tell all of you that being a
4 L, b8 N- T* X- X' U* ~Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.0 _# @0 i! ^4 Q0 l+ y

) z5 f. `$ t" K% H9 T& t4 ~' k" ^I am going to tell you a story."3 ~5 T2 Y$ `& K3 _- _/ A

. o" ^1 }  g9 Q* e$ W* B9 ]I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.- m9 I+ f6 |: Q4 n4 C0 }

; o8 z+ _( z; W6 fHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.8 i9 s. @4 q/ b1 l* i. F

) B' z. T  u6 l+ F; j7 r% xHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.5 D3 M$ [- ]4 W5 p4 H

( H9 Q6 ]" _) @0 M1 M+ |  CHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
. g. }9 _8 G$ h: |. e" N$ q/ z3 H" A/ M- ]
"Thankfully, I was saved.
7 y% h5 C# B) k" j
+ ?! U# m, r* k' I9 Q1 v  zMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
& u1 `4 w1 ]7 e6 d, `1 F/ K
2 G1 g( f, v2 w$ h- e, R6 l5 dI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.  ^; O" z8 T% x) i
7 \+ c6 @- s5 [8 A
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.. S, M$ ]3 t( m
0 Q9 R" A+ x1 N( d
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
0 k! b  B+ f4 Y/ b- l; b% l" z# a
Never underestimate the power of your actions.- g% ?9 b1 m+ s7 c
3 K; M! K# G$ x" n
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.2 p% N) m+ Y) q1 ]( ~0 y# x
: P1 d* \3 c4 P- l& j0 J
For better or for worse.* m/ k. L) H. }( R* \( n
( u' @$ u: |1 N2 b
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
* j/ i' F9 Q% N* g6 e! F) U7 ^, o3 ]# C
5 c7 X; g  C5 c- c5 C) L+ w" L" VLook for God in others.
- Q% b! D6 t9 o2 V6 H; U5 f$ i, K
& c% C" L; M' p- r- i7 KYou now have two choices, you can:
3 Q) g4 Q6 @' B0 W) S9 H5 V* r+ w2 B. j3 o. y
1) Pass this on to your friends or
' w5 [, H: s0 g+ X' R4 V. E# e8 d9 O& m- r! s6 `; d' T
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.. x* d: C2 n# u2 {
) D: c: _, ]' F% Y  O8 i. F" A
As you can see, I took choice number 1.
- \8 i( @  \/ o5 m"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."4 ^5 D: U' K9 T. w* ]

( U; |  m8 @* d1 ?/ m8 PThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.. T3 W4 ^8 S( U: @4 N7 {

. I% v/ Z& G% ?0 ^) lTomorrow is mystery.
/ X% J( r7 E" ~0 d8 z7 S+ r* x. d% i3 {& L
Today is a gift.
  D/ H( D; `! M
! }$ a! t" a7 `+ A3 |It's National Friendship Week. Show your friends how much you care. Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND.
& _7 ]1 _+ o$ }4 y& t/ C/ |. |9 l- V2 u! ]
If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a circle of friends.
