The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public about an on-going computer scam known as ransomware. . i# @& h4 g/ g% F

+ `$ ?4 ]" ?# b7 c8 s3 PRansomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company.

9 t/ }$ }+ d" S s5 tSeveral reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers. ' C1 W) K' m1 {! q: B5 ]2 X
7 t; |3 m0 r" U. z1 n& CIt has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”1 T, u" s: C/ e4 \& r

“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.” ( J# ^1 M3 I: m7 d7 x
0 A9 N' Q- o: G( kRansomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer. ! o% K. ^8 o( y7 | }0 X6 H4 ^
% ^+ D2 W# F6 K5 b# @. RIf you receive one of these messages, please be aware that: ' o. {& V# j/ r: I! M$ L
3 u' `# f b3 I; i0 m) _$ e•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you.
$ m) U; f3 p* d% i, r•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY.
4 H, h5 x, t w•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money. ) T) }9 Z5 C" T# E0 w) u/ e5 D9 k- V( K4 h
•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with.
$ y. g7 T/ c F% @3 @8 xThe recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware.

To protect against cyber attacks, it is recommended to update your software regularly. You should have up-to-date anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection. # Q+ L( c4 {$ K+ z! L# U) X% n
