　　North country scene:
                                                                                               
7 `+ j4 x  k" w+ ]- n　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

* s7 \9 j( [& y　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

　　Both sides of the Great Wall

　　One single white immensity.

　　The Yellow River"s swift current
( r+ Z' T1 T; X# j+ w5 C% H4 [( G
　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes
3 T! \; `( c; g7 [# A0 |
; s9 e3 L+ I" j$ v) ]　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

  Y1 V- V) G4 n( E　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

) A- _1 C  j- J. e( y) p# }　　This land so rich in beauty

　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

  V4 O) ?4 I% b5 T- U　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

8 }+ K3 n) L% @　　Were lacking in literary grace,

5 o$ {! C; W; Y5 t5 ^7 M$ J　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

- [7 q, h2 x) D! u　　Had little poetry in their souls;
9 C# |( G% B4 y& r+ b9 e$ N; x　　And Genghis Khan,

　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,
% n8 C! e9 d( f. _2 O
　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

　　All are past and gone!

　　For truly great men

　　Look to this age alone.
