I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,3 E0 I/ F, A" H+ b; x0 L$ F% }! e
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood( V3 y% J7 {+ m. Y
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
D4 I' H( r: N+ otogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
4 C7 X/ k) A5 a: @5 qCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.5 G9 V: D& |% }2 P* n4 J

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South' f+ H2 ?" O* A7 u. b
Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years3 M4 x0 O0 l6 j {
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter7 I$ u N \3 M9 g& m; f# {
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the' G L+ {/ C1 [& _
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:' ^! l3 p' y& }, P4 {. p4 A3 n
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
+ p: K/ `$ X2 N. u: ]Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the) S0 J5 t. d0 T9 c
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed, v7 k7 b! D9 |# d9 w& O- H
international peacekeeping operation.

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their( m7 V( N, F5 o( ?* ^" m+ U% Y
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
8 d* O) B) ~4 m0 a; Z- qwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV8 j/ L3 ^9 D' N6 t- [3 Z
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
9 r' g) V3 b. j9 Z. \Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
9 [6 ]% M* P9 ?% n4 Oimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs+ I& Y$ ]- z% x* t Z5 L8 |
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!6 C) }, j2 i+ e6 H4 K/ ?
2 j1 Z* [5 C% O. x% hAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the. E& N- b8 F2 l- ^, e. F! ~9 Y; L
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole" Y* u) j+ e* f7 s
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the# h# V B: x( C2 r: a
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around. R% C& W* J3 e" v! u" @
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,1 Y- k3 N! a7 N
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
