1) Community Dialogue Project Phase 1
; ~/ k. \7 a, gI'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.- W1 f# J) a/ B2 O5 K/ q9 e! b
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
7 @6 a$ e" d- d& K1 IEngagement Training.

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
3 P4 X4 g2 I6 E+ o(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood0 ]3 n. \) Y( U) Z r4 r# I
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work4 P/ n4 [2 l6 M: \+ W3 C
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
8 V* ?7 L! t _2 C: b1 f) MCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.9 ]. B1 B5 p. N. @

Synopsis:

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
/ O P, F& |& B3 _5 I ?Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years' _2 k$ A3 i4 v. q* c
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter1 J- b. w( Z3 ]& ?- l
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the2 B7 I! ^+ W* O
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
9 a( B, T% @: u0 Xthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
9 U& b7 v: {+ _6 }" a8 }4 |Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
% e- \2 Q8 R7 T$ ]8 {island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
r: o$ I6 \) r6 Iinternational peacekeeping operation.
. d8 }' [, k$ e- ]& `$ w4 k+ r3 H+ Q
& I4 y7 I! w" K7 x/ K& LThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their; y) j0 d1 o: C$ r
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
# Z: i4 c5 w2 X* j5 K, Twho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV" `- E& _# q9 ]' U+ k
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
; X6 b, q4 ]4 Y( T. RAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems* F" E+ t5 X8 f, m5 |: A7 i
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs1 Z' F; O+ }2 O& j& F
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!# D' k7 ?! q% | ?3 n3 T5 O1 L
! a" s' H5 w9 w) o2 X1 E
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
9 ?7 J9 u+ S, l# _3 f/ tsuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
$ u7 j W& {) r8 y9 X! T$ tprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the$ P' ~3 K* H% |# k3 g
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.% n1 s* U( W7 _; d- p6 a) x
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
. X X" G! B" I; Y9 Rso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."7 E6 ^! \; f" c" d
