I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.- G9 _+ f& M, S/ `2 k- U7 u/ \
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
/ E8 {6 E$ f& GEngagement Training.# A% p% z. \, W$ _
* z6 p# B) O& F2 I" |
We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,: ~3 B! D' V. r' x T, `$ ?+ {
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood" U6 f9 I! {' b% z
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
! t& H0 v/ u1 |together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy- F4 I# m- h& M$ e `
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.$ H1 f; R% a$ c

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
* |# a9 g7 g6 B% R! Nof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
' m3 S5 H4 h1 q ~; W* qconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the" w1 m$ I+ k7 F0 M
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
' x& }9 w; ~ e* T0 athey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
# ?/ V: f% T) ?Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the$ T8 R, L7 P* {2 N( n: o
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
, M0 w$ c# m0 q2 `) t- F7 Kinternational peacekeeping operation.

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their

screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and! f1 S+ H2 N! b$ t' p5 _, g
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
, g" k! Z& Y& s- w! ?2 R* Q+ e$ Mimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs" q+ o' a* l& {0 U) x2 A4 s: V
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!; \" I6 I0 K- h8 G5 C: v! D4 F3 g
4 o5 k; A" G- L! G7 ?According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
& l6 u3 y1 M4 T! `; Z( s0 I# R5 L8 @success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
. l7 @6 T) L" F qprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the

Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,0 h0 _8 p+ S( k* \9 n
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
