I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
+ |0 a: }. _1 t: j9 J, |/ {+ wIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
9 W, X4 @' v/ z# zEngagement Training.
; @ E2 A: P' A8 u5 Y- ?0 l% L% x2 L9 r
We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
7 L2 s: }5 q: @* C) t9 X# N# {(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
: v) D9 `8 B$ l' @& g6 @+ e% ]groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
$ D( d/ B1 T, J" p; Ftogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
4 ] H: U1 N, X+ k/ g9 sCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
6 T* W" i* ^4 kof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter# O0 `( r7 M" ~ Z- s- l) e4 z
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
0 R8 l y: }, T- w9 F5 r6 jinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:5 l b8 }" F/ S9 N' f
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
& U. I- ~# N, U6 EIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
! U: x- _6 B+ F2 Jisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed% _. j4 |# K: k c2 _9 |/ n
international peacekeeping operation.5 z$ \) N3 W. Y0 X9 V

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their1 O0 U& p( H4 O$ R
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people1 I" x! ~& q0 F, I3 e: D }4 ?: @
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
9 r' v7 M8 r3 R3 m6 F; r7 Cscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
! s# j2 v9 |4 f5 lAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
9 u8 |% ^4 A( h9 A! i% @improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs/ w+ \( F4 q9 i( K1 q" H
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!5 w W% z! ^2 d7 Z
1 ]! V8 t' I5 t7 B, A5 F; t
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
; D1 X7 e- b8 ~ p& L3 i7 {success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole/ z3 N+ C2 K, P* b' m$ b. Q `
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the j7 U7 J4 ~ x4 p9 Z, @4 v
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
( Z- ~7 W, L; F3 m+ ^& N' E; sAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
( @. f8 ~. C- xso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
