CALGARY -- Liquor merchants are applauding a move by the Alberta government to restrict a price increase proposed by the province's alcohol distributor.

" a# c! Z2 q/ k' E/ ~" K8 Y0 k* ]" G' qConnects Logistics, the sole supplier to all liquor merchants in the province, will be able to raise its rates Feb. 25, but not to the levels it recently asked for.

' f) u" M! v; _9 b# ?The industry had a difficult year in 2006 when Connects Logistics chronically failed to deliver shipments because of what the distributor said was a labour shortage.

2 P, c! S& f) `0 m3 `3 C5 M8 }That's one of the reasons the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission forced the supplier to roll back its proposed increases, said spokeswoman Marilyn Carlyle-Helms.

The increases approved by the liquor commission would see merchants pay, on average, an extra 10 cents for a 750-millilitre bottle of wine or spirits, 40 cents for a dozen imported bottled beer and 25 cents per dozen of imported canned beer.
