A vote held earlier in the week saw 84 per cent of students in favour of the passes, which will be mandatory regardless of whether or not they ride on transit.

Getting to this point took five years of debate and negotiations, said U of A student union president Samantha Power on Friday.

, Y0 H3 e+ @" L, U$ bPower said the U-Pass will be environmentally friendly by encouraging more students to use transit, and those who already buy monthly passes will save about $300 a year when the new pass kicks in next fall.
