Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 9 T- |$ K0 ]3 {$ c) n

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties / `$ Q7 e& a3 F* W5 Y! s
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
9 s1 `* v+ C+ U# C7 Fnews to report from that meeting.
* p% y( m( P1 |2 @% v& B* J' C& c6 c3 ~
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
$ A; e; s) C- B" vundergraduate international students from the increase to the
* ]! D7 I' Z: C! }4 fdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
) M6 H# ?! k8 D: H" Zstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
. X) N4 v' c$ _2 t% T3 P8 B9 Rtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
% d# G. G0 V8 D+ M. m& A8 L' p% q8 nAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase & r7 V8 [! H! ]3 V
the differential for international graduate students.1 | ~, `0 Q; W, |8 y2 t
3 ]; C- [; v7 J2 v. I4 f
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
# w- W# v+ P" D0 qincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
Y: w, r- c, c) |! ]/ X* c9 |220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
) ?, L# M) l# G+ Qwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
( ^# o! _5 R- v+ G# D7 aleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 2 ]6 L0 R- H" [/ g
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected " Y& {) w! r0 G3 \4 B
increases once they are here.! n3 t; T- P7 y4 R c

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the * [. p6 f- N+ A9 Z- h2 ^
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I % v- {; E& m" X9 B, l/ C
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
0 ~/ [7 Z% E* d' r8 w1 j% bhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
7 m2 Y/ A! v9 H- ^7 L4 V* Iincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
