Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ) K; X3 B7 d( X5 B" Q' g

Dear International Undergraduate Students,) e* [$ v- f' s" a1 l
/ q) }5 s/ I1 b# \% u4 |+ _0 R" AYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
- d& a$ n/ c0 M2 ^8 ?( v, H4 aCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
7 T9 P* z. `1 l. A2 Z* b5 [news to report from that meeting., [! U" Y' t4 F2 V6 X8 i- j0 x
+ ^, o, R/ M( t% Q3 J+ i- x) O! m
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current & m% I9 }" u' }1 i( K
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
( M/ e L3 i: Y' Q \8 Y" pdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international ' h1 t8 q5 ]! a- H* v2 J
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
2 k$ g& Z+ V9 i; ]3 J$ k8 u, Ptuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ) C# H3 S8 T' r& F1 ^
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase , Q: ^9 n+ A: y+ x! e( k0 D
the differential for international graduate students.0 z& w, Q8 C4 |$ q
5 A7 X" M$ F7 s3 H6 i% A R+ D- s/ `Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
Z- d8 Q' j* I y$ H5 Gincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to $ Y9 C! Y& c+ _' P2 s8 E
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
3 H+ A- s# T* v* Iwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
; _/ Q6 W' p* z3 W7 Bleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
1 h8 a6 C& w2 |; V, X: Y4 Rtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
" x0 W+ |) s" q( Sincreases once they are here.+ h7 ^( L: h) F( H; p' Q$ u
: e$ [ S: s$ M+ y4 J/ l9 GThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
+ \# x1 Q9 \4 O' U" m0 ?1 ]international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I . A# S$ l( R8 R
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that * f% ~" a( M8 f( Y2 u$ A9 n1 V
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
8 n j7 B, o, L7 Cincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
