Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 3 j3 s' r# e% b0 o, R- C
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
; T3 b% W( p" F6 ~1 wnews to report from that meeting.
" R: j" ^+ A+ c: G8 Y9 B6 b) [7 _. B# l; @ x2 e0 F3 ^/ g' u
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current . B/ G6 Z& _: [- r6 E
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 5 M0 ]- P. O/ R [7 N' q
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
# |" H9 N; @5 W, s9 ]2 Vstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base - L5 j5 z! ^ f: m
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
3 B: Z' {8 P6 Q2 rAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ) }. [, P- W' o7 p4 c; J1 A7 \$ J
the differential for international graduate students. V l# |' h2 k$ I2 Z# j& N
/ @3 Z; l& \6 fNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
9 M# n9 Y) G9 p! L ~0 V' {/ y y! rincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to / _" I P. y0 ~& z
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
; M! \1 |. W% L+ ]+ w2 zwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
6 r; y8 p% Y2 E4 cleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
1 i7 @. d7 @4 otuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
' ]& H% ?, Z' Pincreases once they are here.9 q2 |: {' O7 D+ P4 ~% _. ]

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the + W, K# {& j5 d# Z2 D
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
+ R8 i1 n" r9 l- \6 |5 e! S4 B2 ~( r, \increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
