EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

Calgary saw a 0.3 per cent slide compared to July of last year.

" H/ _6 s; {3 k, E) J# V- ]2 \" P& H+ sEven heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.

+ ^! Y' T. C3 Z8 b* _The fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.( F4 w1 R( q+ z* r4 {

As the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.

# N! _7 }8 U, M N2 s; e g% TPrices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.9 u! _) K0 m+ l0 x* T x7 _
