4 b( q3 a6 y. |* H, p" I8 \* X/ k/ SDear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the7 s Y7 Q+ G0 X: ~% b
Master Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule# E: |* @( I" Q- C( X' Y. Z7 {5 f' G3 a
(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about1 x* n! X0 W1 P+ e7 N; ?
environmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste
; T! n! W+ o6 T" Ymanagement; home composting; household hazardous waste;, ]4 l) ?( K. N" K H, B* j
vermin-composting and residential recycling.3 \& H5 K: C* r; Y4 b( N: a g$ A; V& k$ @
; d, V9 u. ` c2 j
This course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips
; R/ J& N& i/ Cto various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates
" u8 J! F" a, i2 V' }+ Dcomplete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:/ R. B( Y; U6 v2 o0 \+ s7 y% C
reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important
9 n. [8 Y/ o+ a6 ?" Kresources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the# I N0 l+ y6 Z( K: d7 l
importance of composting and recycling.

Examples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the
# y9 R/ S' g" yReuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;
1 Z# x- w4 k! e+ h6 b# Cpublic education display booths; assisting with programs and4 \, {0 j$ g3 \/ u( n& i9 _
maintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at2 A( }) ~$ u" j0 I9 P: Y
various demonstration gardens and general public and school

There are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and& N" u. `; r& L% {9 l+ q
volunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the6 ~. @/ P2 X U! O7 M
