EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.. j% x* F8 H/ p, n1 l; n
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
Q4 w( \1 a% H4 ^% y2 zThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.6 l$ p% u# r/ V0 J+ x6 a
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.: g. G3 t+ ~4 ~0 v
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
# y3 [- v7 X# o4 m2 eEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
, V ^5 t" V1 _0 y* k* H1 MThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
