Edmonton's population grows by 30,000 I; f$ K5 l# z- p

) y& X. ^9 a0 B4 I- XEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.
" }! P% e6 Q6 F"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
" [) O( a% \& uThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

5 ~2 t, y9 N5 `8 s* Q; U"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. " y8 F- R. ]5 M, o; M- _' H
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
* U7 y7 F$ e$ } ?- t9 o/ R! ZThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
