The Engineers and Technologists Integration Program (ETIP) involves a

• Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN)
" f; @7 c0 S* s0 T& c1 ~3 T• Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (ASET), and
6 k2 V. V6 P/ q4 j, N/ P• Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).' n6 w8 T4 I; T G. m, g0 o' a
Beginning in 1995, ETIP:
1 F m) n1 e Z9 Z" `• supports foreign-educated engineer and engineering technologists, and
" b! o6 E) M% ~' G2 s, h9 r• helps participants develop the skills and recognition needed to work as+ d! c9 m7 \2 e

Applicants to ETIP can apply for funding to attend the program through: t! ~' o$ E5 r& M9 N9 X

Alberta is home to many foreign-educated immigrant engineers. These
4 L4 V9 m; D+ `8 Rimmigrants are highly educated and experienced, yet many may find it8 _& l& w+ t* U/ N+ S
difficult to integrate into the Alberta workforce. Some employers may not6 o4 U/ u+ i- P B7 m, p0 I
recognize their international experience or credentials.2 [$ W6 B, y3 R* p0 }/ o, J
What is the practice?
j2 @6 f! b, N! ] v! }Integrated training offers a blend of occupation-related skills, a work
* W9 o2 m8 u- x' r; b, texperience and competency-based training, such as applied academics or
' O* D0 _; }( C& Z& @3 U" VEnglish as a Second Language.$ a# d! i5 H4 I. x2 N" c; y
The ETIP program involves four phases:

and recognition of professional qualifications in the engineering

• The program addresses both the needs of foreign-educated engineer; Z5 A1 ?2 ^6 s; y( d, V f( ^
immigrants and the shortage of engineering technologists in the

Each member of the ETIP partnership contributes their expertise in order to

• EMCN recruits for ETIP and has a strong relationship with the' G7 y7 p0 ^2 _3 i8 {( I
Edmonton immigrant community.
) [2 E5 _9 E2 C, [' V• NAIT delivers engineering technologist education applicable to the
- M& t5 }! i; d8 _Canadian workforce.
+ Y" g5 R0 ]. S+ v7 z• ASET provides professional recognition of the qualifications of ETIP
1 f: \; {$ ~4 i6 j% A, k. W$ dgraduates.
/ `8 q) C+ T" W b, v! z: m( I1 SWhat is the evidence of success?
! r! M) |' V* k/ h! G: CAs of 2003, more than 80% of ETIP graduates over the past six years have
( [7 Z: U' q7 _4 j9 |4 Sfound engineering or engineering technologist employment in Alberta.
2 ] f* d" g) G! E6 }, z( Y! J" CIn 2004, 46 engineers graduated from the ETIP program. At the time of9 T6 \. P9 e$ i( G2 s8 ]
graduation, almost half had secured employment in the engineering industry,
