The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
3 u* [# s) I6 H( [; w1 ?/ i& qRoles and Functions
; y. ^ n: h5 b- d& n% W: dThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the, f: s( M( |1 H! O# y1 \1 }! s
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the- W9 S0 D; W8 m+ O- D9 m
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
- H/ b& w1 F& q8 cthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
' h8 k' X( P. @$ goperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular& p4 J- M; ~! q# U( M
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is' u5 ?% F8 N- L) j1 A
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an2 `2 z; M1 z m: B/ V/ Q* j" ?/ z
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires& j3 c9 Q" U6 L# B. U" w1 i; m
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
0 I* B2 k7 {' j) h- ]7 z9 {) \" Ball board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
: y% k( Y: e% k9 x7 ^2 p# W1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
) `( A- ^6 \- L6 l8 C. |& ^officers of the Coalition
. G4 h8 g7 n5 }# ?& f* e1 Q, Y2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
0 m G0 W- L% w+ [/ ~organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations( q5 C0 \' e6 G9 u8 X; X' R
and public institutions
$ `! A( o& a8 O( A0 V3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through& ]* E5 y( ^9 P9 v, y& s2 F
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives% Z" e* F* v( H2 ~
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community7 S# H: r. `* @- m; ~6 u
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

, I2 X8 r Q4 b6 ~1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its. F2 l4 y7 l6 m I l+ i) c5 x
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
4 R* A' r$ U) Kdirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the: Y& i0 u5 w4 k0 ^& ~7 F8 t6 `
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
7 h2 [- v6 W+ m7 X0 N' @2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the9 j4 U8 Z* p1 e8 y" @

; Q* ?5 T+ w3 `7 }8 BRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board
3 Z+ d) n o& @% iAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to4 R9 W1 I R( p5 P, j% m) [
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
( m3 e. [# y7 I3 f2 Roperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
6 p4 X7 ]0 B- X9 c+ s# G1 H& A2 d9 lThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and8 z: Z1 X& l/ V" l8 L7 v
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should5 y/ ^+ M- E* ]8 p" U
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership/ _5 t1 D0 I- ^) k% n8 ?* w/ B
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
. g. j* r9 n2 ufacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
& z1 H* M' F' g) O/ a% S! R- O- Ldirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial7 i7 [7 A" j6 H6 i
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all4 c& R& F7 ?5 B" K x0 n5 E
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of. |* N5 s1 E! Q
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of

3. Experience in writing grant proposals and accessing funding
