The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
6 h4 P2 U' m) B4 nRoles and Functions
. O! C* `3 s% W2 a9 k0 ^7 c7 a$ yThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
$ S6 Q( M; r) D3 h: D4 T% eorganization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the1 W2 ^0 S9 i4 o
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
8 J& Q ~* u4 v" J1 b/ y" p5 bthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,7 J( Z* R( \% j* Y7 `
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
& r2 W$ |$ r/ r% P6 Hboard meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
1 p1 Q' a+ w, B- aconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
2 | X) Z$ ^' _* c* v6 Xemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
8 k3 o4 R+ e! t" c. C9 ystaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
# M; u1 o5 X/ pall board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.6 `1 P" q6 d" y2 J( I( t5 j4 z* A
/ Q! [+ E' U3 A" c* s$ o- oFunctions and responsibilities:6 d6 z0 M$ x6 y3 z9 D
The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
. n- Z- q$ g9 u1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
: ~/ ~" J; }. S' i: Q2 M' kofficers of the Coalition
; G! B$ y1 Y" f$ a( m$ q2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
* K4 v' r/ ]. ] I+ {organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations h8 [+ N7 a$ g2 `, P
and public institutions
0 U3 |( i& i9 T0 \" ?0 h3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
( h: `% b" |4 l1 Ifunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
. V+ X( j$ h% q1 r# h8 T4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community7 A" r( f* z1 d+ q! V" z6 d
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

! F2 j1 N$ k' t+ q5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic

with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

2 f6 e# r8 m) J3 b+ tAdministrative responsibilities:& ~/ j0 D$ r5 d1 W9 W& ?3 e
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
3 b) h! ]5 @7 t1 s3 E; fregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of1 y% V n- K! R) H: H9 F4 G/ a
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
' P H0 _+ `1 q3 F: Umembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.
" [- a3 `3 }( Q6 A' y( w2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the6 f6 W) l& ~* e: F

Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board2 C' `8 N) |/ {1 v6 U3 p' F
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to% ]3 T" D4 N- G1 ?# r @( E
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
% c3 H2 v W) noperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
( E, d$ G! ?; XThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and: K* a* i9 v4 `% i/ P
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should: g8 K& D+ Y# S" i# `
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
5 b, ?: a/ d4 r6 C- p. N0 Y4 I1 m3 \participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
" i4 V6 U- O- ]4 P8 k" B0 F6 U! Zfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
2 w5 O( G7 q- F5 B1 kdirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial' p9 ^3 p$ C. a9 ?$ Z
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all. w1 ]# o7 `6 f/ j
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
, F% v3 }) m J. ?directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
