for Internet services. It is essential that I hear the views of Canadians
+ q' L8 P k6 j4 u; \on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear
6 t# W1 Z( H. Y0 P" D- @& jthat we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet
5 R$ J% p/ M- n j6 v' I( [service providers.

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are) \7 g0 i: @ s+ P6 k
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving$ l% Z, w& g1 t, E& x. N# F+ |" ~' C
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
9 h2 P( W# I4 T: N- Y0 h7 xCanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look, F% W3 }% ]2 A, K4 X6 f3 W) a; ]4 Q
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be; m* ?' h" v$ ~4 [0 r
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and2 j1 ^1 J% e# U- f
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
" s/ u {# x0 }1 X1 X: ?4 o" y6 Tmarket forces to prevail.

# X, E W* s+ eThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
! U4 X5 s! s6 v' S$ Vchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large7 a) N. W3 c8 y; J" b/ ^3 R# m# B
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the4 i; V1 d' f6 I: l' G$ ]9 f
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
" F. I7 L( S" J; x, u" aline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages/ Q& ]+ l2 v8 s9 s9 W
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
, |2 o5 d t4 A2 V* k* c9 H. Dany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
