for Internet services.  It is essential that I hear the views of Canadians

an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
0 G' T6 `, y9 G6 }: ncarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture.  We will be
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
- Z3 _1 @& T/ ^6 linvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
7 \7 [+ L- e9 D4 nmarket forces to prevail.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
; t' [; f& j& {, h. Q1 [8 Mchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
" G, X' P6 |* a* x- J0 Anumber of Canadians.  Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the
" `) D% p! Q! igovernment will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
- k, }# C8 L% ]4 Qline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
  s' d5 i" J. ?' x& Ocompetition among internet service providers.  I will be recommending that
; D9 n6 q$ O: p) J- q+ bany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
