service providers.

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are7 U4 ~" P, A; }/ b% Y, K9 d& L. F4 P2 u
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
; v5 _& G( Q* X& a4 Jinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops l4 w% _$ ?3 e
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look1 B5 |% ?* T% w! i" j5 K; m" ]" [* }
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
% j/ b( i5 d8 R8 k3 Dguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and. ^ a5 p2 s. B n9 ]* B3 l
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing0 u' } B$ c( w( ~
market forces to prevail. ; N; f; a5 r' k i8 M% L

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has9 }- Y% y" v) ^: a3 Y4 u
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large) r4 q. g2 D3 I/ Q7 Y
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at0 c: d' v( _5 N! U

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the7 ]& e) s. ]) f& `) b: y/ y
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
: e+ z, U5 t0 |$ R# E6 Vline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
7 O' x7 J" L: k% @) H9 Pcompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
8 ^% m+ u$ Y7 ^$ F1 J5 Kany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
