* i5 V5 }' g5 ^: sPosition Profile Heavy Duty Mechanics inspect, service, and maintain diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations.

They are also responsible for other important tasks, including:

' V- v9 w0 m9 h$ r6 j, iDiagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
Operating machinery in a safe and effective manner
Providing daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
Assembling and starting engines
Diagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
Preparing inspection, work and maintenance reports
Performing other functions as assigned


Good eye-hand coordination
' d- n$ y: d; m& j$ v- ]' \* aFrequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds
Occasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds
Physical work, sometimes outdoors in extreme weather conditions
Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise and vibrations

& c$ X. n# z0 v5 V. kBasic technical knowledge of diesel

8 e( }2 C7 n1 BMay need current, valid drivers license, CDL, and locomotive engineer certification
Visual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.

This is not a Red Seal apprenticeship.
