Edmonton's population grew at boom-time levels during the past five years, despite an economic downturn some thought might temper growth.

$ }& D0 O; y& ]6 xStatistics Canada reported Wednesday that Alberta's population increased at twice the national average, while results of the 2011 federal census showed the Edmonton area's population grew at a faster rate than any other metro region in Canada from 2006 to 2011, with the exception of Calgary.

JThe capital region - including municipalities such as Beaumont, Spruce Grove and Fort Saskatchewan - grew from slightly more than a million people in 2006 to nearly 1.2 million people in 2011. ( E& Q$ i6 k6 J/ m z8 y4 f( Y& @Edmonton alone added nearly 82,000 people in that time, bringing the population to 812,200. Originally, the city's chief economist John Rose thought Edmonton might see a slight slowdown from the impressive 9.6-per-cent growth it reported in the 2006 census. Instead, he said, strong job numbers in the past year helped push it to 11.2 per cent.
