Vietnam catfish farmers angered by French reports2 m4 @; E. x0 e8 c

Hanoi - Vietnamese fishing authorities are angry over French television reports and websites alleging that Vietnamese catfish, known in Europe as pangassius or panga, are contaminated with pollution, antibiotics or hormones, an official at the Vietnamese Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said Monday./ I0 C6 w$ D1 b) b' E% N! [6 b: e
5 {( k8 C! \8 f- a! p
Two televised reports critical of the Vietnamese pangassius farming industry have been picked up widely by French food and health websites. VASEP says the television reports and websites fabricate food safety issues in order to keep Vietnamese imports out of French markets.: c. R! Y# h( e

! O2 z; G) i5 \; U'In a battle to win market share, many people will slander each other,' said Nguyen Huu Dung, deputy chairman of VASEP. 'These websites are just reporting wrong ideas.'
, a$ X* E" M& \4 Z& J) z  c  g! i5 Z% ~. S' G
European environmental and food safety organizations largely say concerns over the safety of pangassius imports in Europe are misplaced. They say the fish are safe to eat but that more needs to be done to address the environmental sustainability of the industry.
+ I% N8 z8 c- \. i3 I6 @
: [3 S% \. u) e, T% V'The European Union has a very good system for checking the quality of imported products,' said Flavio Corsin, an aquaculture advisor at the environmentalist organization WWF who works on the Vietnamese pangassius industry. 'I'm Italian, and when I go to Italy, I eat pangassius, because I know where it's coming from and I know that the process of checking it is good.'6 L/ Q% m: ^6 z& d/ U. e: I- \

/ ?. x+ N/ c0 _& c( JThe French reports include 'Saga of the Panga,' broadcast in 2007 on the television channel France 2, and 'What is a Panga?', broadcast on the cable channel M6. They focus on water pollution in the Mekong Delta, where the pangassius farming industry is concentrated, and on the use of antibiotics, and also note that the method for breeding the fish involves the use of a hormone isolated from the urine of pregnant women to stimulate females to produce eggs.
5 s& h3 ~4 c8 F+ j2 p, B# z5 k' o; t
The reports provide no data for comparing pollution in the Mekong to that in European fisheries. While hormones are used on a few breeder females to stimulate egg production, they are not used in raising the fish who are harvested, and are thus not present in filets sold in supermarkets.% p  C3 W, a) l- _: V- j1 ?) m

( N+ ?0 o) i% ^. H* P% _Corsin said antibiotics were no longer a problem in pangassius shipments to Europe, and that while Vietnamese fish sometimes failed EU safety inspections, fish harvested within the European Union sometimes failed as well.$ z5 F( u: g8 `

, z: o- D9 |  f$ v" f4 `WWF is leading negotiations between Vietnamese producers and European importers to establish certification procedures for sustainable pangassius farming. The standards would address issues such as biodiversity, chemicals and antibiotics, and social responsibility.
: \0 f# v2 x3 w" F0 u5 J+ d3 E/ L7 m
. S% \5 N  Y2 D$ L$ B  a: B  MCommenters on the French websites worried about the provenance of an unfamiliar fish which only appeared in the European market within the last five years, and were anxious over issues such as globalization and chemicals.
7 H% Y4 w# @$ b$ h, A0 N# i) z; @: P5 m5 O! J! |  r* @
But Vietnamese officials took the reports as an attempt to block the inroads made by Vietnamese fish on the French market.

7 A( z6 n6 ?  w4 gA report in the newspaper Dau Tu on Monday quoted Truong Dinh Hoe, VASEP's general secretary, calling the reports 'an organized slanderous program aiming at damaging the prestige of Vietnamese tra and basa [pangassius] fish on the international market.'- s' g3 ^& Z* K) U& H0 E

' A% q5 S& d3 U6 ?* {Vietnam had no significant pangassius exports to the European Union before 2003. In 2007, Vietnam exported 3.75 billion dollars worth of seafood, including some 1.5 million tons of pangassius, with half of those exports going to the EU.

Cause of Death: Consumption of Basa Fish& ! q8 b" |; v6 \
This article is written a Guest Blogger Kimberly Truong. Kimberly is currently an English graduate student at Cal State Fullerton.: 5 m  o' R6 y3 ?8 Q. X9 v
Is it possible that the after-school fish stick snacks you have been feeding your child could possibly be contaminated with deadly metals such as mercury?! Unfortunately, the answer is YES. The dangers of consuming too much fish are usually paired with the not-so-rare disease hydrargyria (better known as mercury poisoning) but now it seems that there’s a new danger to this delicious after-school snack and ambient dinner main course." f' l! i# h/ V6 G
A popular frozen fish product imported from Vietnam called basa fish just made the “Do Not Consume” list. Basa fish (known in the UK as Vietnamese river cobbler) is a type of catfish that is farmed in pens along the Mekong River. Basa fish is known for its mild taste and flaky white meat and is becoming the preferred type of fish among consumers because of its “cleaner” and almost bland taste compared to other types of farm-raised fish.
# X6 [, Q. v" n# ~2 T6 f( W
) V: C9 E; F5 }7 @Consumers in The United States were introduced to basa fish in 1994 after the trade embargo with Vietnam was finally lifted. It was not a popular choice at first, but now it is a great competition for domestic catfish farmers. This is because basa fish is cheaper than catfish, has similar taste, and the quality of it is not any less. The quick rise in the basa fish’s popularity created the “Catfish War” in The United States.3 I0 C5 X) 6 h3 [! \5 W& h1 y
A few years after the spike in popularity of basa fish, scientists discovered the danger of its consumption. Basa fish are farmed along the Mekong River—one of the most polluted rivers in the world. Large manufacturers planted along this river frequently dump extremely toxic and dangerous chemicals and industrial waste directly into it. In June of 2001, the US Food and Drug Administration imposed increased and more thorough testing on Southeast Asian farm-raised seafood including the basa fish after repeatedly discovering fish contaminated with heavy metals and banned antibiotics.' 8 G8 y0 X; v0 ?5 N* ?8 y7 |
In March 2007, The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service surveyed 100 fish from this river and detected 14 antimicrobial chemicals at low levels, including sulphonamides, tetracyclines, malachite green, penicillin, quinolones, flouroquinolones and phenicols antimicrobial chemical groups. Regarding these findings, Peter Collignon, director of microbiology and infectious diseases at the Australian National University medical school reports that “this means [that] antibiotics were used in the production of those fish… [and] superbugs can develop and they can remain [in the fish] and come across to people and cause problems.”
% U3 |1 v. H* w$ S  d- ]* Q) Q1 O2 \1 V6 j, l6 M! @
Farmed basa fish are not fed their natural foods. They are fed the bones and remnants of dead fish usually after a period of time after the fishes’ deaths—giving time for bacteria to grow and infect the “basa fish food.” These farmed fish are also often injected with dehydrated urine of pregnant women forcing female basa fish to grow and produce eggs quicker and the injection of hormones, imported from a pharmaceutical company in China, increases the speed of the growth and production processes of the fish. Farmers of these fish are only concerned with the progression rates and the income these fish bring in with no concern for the consumers.!
$ `$ C/ q, W1 ~( y8 q! r* XTo summarize everything in a few words: basa fish may be poisonous!
+ O, g+ |4 q: h+ I. hSide effects include vomiting, diarrhea and other effects that often stem from food poisoning. True, there may be a few out there who are able to tolerate the fish without having to suffer these side effects, but you should be aware of the health precautions.
) o1 `8 J, Q3 q+ G6 tHopefully from now on, you will be aware of the potential risks basa fish poses to your health. It’s easy enough when you’re shopping for fresh fish, but be especially aware when buying packaged seafood like imitation crab, fish sticks, fish terrines, and even pet food. Simply flip the package to the back and check the list of ingredients to make sure that basa fish isn’t an ingredient.
/ F7 E+ ]0 m# Y
+ I. W1 |2 |& Z. e. I& DIs saving a few pennies a pound worth the risk of exposing your family to such deadly fish? There is a chance the fish are completely clean and will cause no problems, but considering the risks, is it worth it to assume the fish are uncontaminated when it comes to your loved-ones? Keep in mind that if a price is too good to be true, most likely, it IS too good to be true!
