Introducing Solid Feeds to Your Baby
' J) }* v" y1 o$ lNote: Introduce each new food individually and for 4-5 days before introducing any other new food.
1 L+ ^$ V- O* M! S$ kBabies do not require solid foods before 4-6 months of age. Until then, breast milk or formula provides the best form of nutrition for the child. Solids may be introduced in the following order:( f! K1 G+ y. p2 B: n7 f% c( k; x' g
4-6 moths -- CEREAL (start with rice, then later, barley, oatmeal, sobee.)- F3 n. f% @& ?% E k6 N
5-7 months -- JUICE (Apple juice diluted with equal parts water, up to 120ml(4oz) once or twice daily. No orange or citrus juice until 1 year). X) G+ s0 @1 n- C# d
5-7 months--VEGETABLES (Squash, peas, sweet potato, carrots, (no spinach, broccoli.).Orang and yellow vegetables first, then green.4 g6 b) R( A% ]' F8 N. Z4 O) ^
6-7 months --FRUIT (Apple,pear, banana,peach,apricot,etc)
" s+ `0 H* U2 U% t7-8 months--DAIRY (Yoghurt, cottage cheese, mild processed cheese.)
6 Y* o+ r/ T0 O( m7 _8-9 months--Meat & Fish (Chicken, veal, beef, lamb. (no pork or fish until at least 1 year).
0 [6 C f! w* K4 n10-12 months--Eggs (Yolk from 10-11 months, egg white 11-12 months)/ E* n- \5 E b4 L
IN bottle fed babies, iron fortified formula should be used until 12 months of age. After 1 year homogenized milk can be used.
$ W( J1 i2 j; y9 W1 g1. All solids including cereal should be fed by teaspoon and not mixed in the formula.5 _' M+ A; Z% k3 T) N4 d- H3 M
2. Start with 1 to 2 teaspoons twice daily and increase according to your chld's needs.) L* n0 ~; B+ w5 D' p7 I
3. introduce new foods one at a time, generally 1 per week.3 B ?/ s S4 D5 H2 c$ Z
4. Individual food products are preferred to mixed cereals and other mixed foods.! Z6 W( ^% @6 G8 E, K
5. Solids should be given after nursing or formula feeds, until 6-months to promote milk intake.( i' v, O* U( T7 V! O9 e# r
6. You may use standard commercial products or make your own blenderized foods without any added salt or sugar. (Publlic Health may have more information on home-made foods)
