Insurance required

5 K. A1 f( E2 r9 ?2 ^$ ZExcept as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall" k: A6 t4 Y7 n) d2 Q
not do any of the following:
( G8 S! U1 M5 d' {! B, y8 k2 u" y(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
' _0 b7 }& x8 u- Y. rvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
, z" ~ ]' B& \4 ~9 e2 `(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
/ ?6 b% X) y9 ?- B( Uvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;4 U- F: |) L% M5 O
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
# l+ K, A5 L+ N- }5 j& f mpermit another person
/ E* K1 Y8 m) v5 y$ P4 b(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or% c3 a( g& ~0 |5 t# @, E
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,- t, ^7 h, v$ G5 y
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
( T/ e1 Z3 G) I# O(d) give or lend a financial% J1 P3 s; z" T4 U- u
responsibility card or a copy of it G3 p$ M9 }5 j
to a person not entitled to have that financial3 P: M5 J- [4 L0 `$ k
responsibility card or copy.

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
& A6 G- m, S+ Mwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
7 w. M- c( ]" ~! S* u5 ythe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
& S, i5 ?- O X6 r) U(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
$ G# Z1 ^5 h4 Q) q+ Q) jnot an insured motor vehicle.6 R/ F9 n3 J0 G3 T
(2)4 i1 q9 p" s& |) N
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
0 b3 \3 Y5 z$ B& ?* F4 AAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this
/ ~6 F0 n3 K8 s2 g0 M+ qsection.

2 ~0 y& i. i9 VSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a. x. ]* i0 z P5 d) F8 q
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the- L# [. ~, f: w/ U8 L- d) \" _! p
Insurance Act
$ m! Z' m) y+ O" z. U( r9 Oby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
9 e0 o5 X" |8 N& H- ooutside Alberta." \. p c5 `- m0 e: w

3 n1 J: r) ]2 j( xA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
' \9 _5 g; u8 Y J; m2 c& z9 Z/ |(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
3 X _. _* @+ K! O( R0 B(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
3 _) z- @+ p: s9 ?) kand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to( |- T2 T1 b0 z
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
0 O, Z2 z# Q. @$ ?+ h, Hmore than 6 months
6 }# m' a2 `7 j3 h: [' k5 O( l1 o9 ]* H. p1 h. E; `; R
Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
