谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语

4 G& q* ^* P4 l  Z在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
* |' \, T7 R% @0 C8 c/ A  C之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。, @$ S2 m  b/ i) J$ k3 _# A9 b
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!+ q4 i( p% ^4 G/ `/ C- D$ P7 |" x
; [: J. ~+ J3 X9 B9 `
(1) empty suit:
( T+ C& L6 [) s; {/ j指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。
% C$ |+ c- P) u: L7 J8 }(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。); B. E, `5 O. X" J& v
例如:+ i' U$ s. Y9 T: S" e
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.  ]# x6 p' W6 q1 {
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)9 S$ I  w) m  P8 A
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.
; x. @! n: @1 l(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
: m  I* A9 u' K' N  m$ K, O; r4 E( t虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:
7 X3 _3 E- p- AThe company is filled with a lot of empty suits.
6 q; j' h8 `* |(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)7 c2 X, p- c8 V0 S
(2) fair-haired boy:! S1 s5 N1 M/ G, x
指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
$ F6 A2 j- p. R8 i(通常用单数,当名词用)$ s7 |; S: H! u$ y" b* g# d
例如:9 P  x: \  N4 \/ C- e/ [& ~$ J" m
Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.
/ `( `- D, [+ C% W5 ~( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
1 b$ V' B& g1 X& q$ U6 l  h* n- m9 @Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
+ j) b, K; Y! }8 X(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)
4 m9 k) ]* f. {+ Y有时也可用复数:
1 r" G; B# M. F' b. Y8 g% S7 HMr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.4 b# g7 \  r# _! S; t
(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
, {6 `, k  h- B0 VFair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
1 o4 `* d. F) B0 |% U6 X) g(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)1 j, U: O6 w! V7 l9 a" {1 R7 A: `* h
(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)5 Z3 g  H& F8 B2 O/ H$ }' y4 \& }
(3) fishing expedition:
, |5 x) T0 b+ q* X4 ]  K, r( C为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)0 R! R7 y! W8 {5 b& O/ ~* z! P
(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)
8 V; A- }( T. E1 \+ H例如:7 H# x9 }% k3 X& U4 I- q
The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.: \+ v' e3 F2 e4 `8 l# t/ E& l
(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)$ z1 A% h" q$ K2 Z
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.
; q# i- I( u. X( |5 e5 F(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)
% m  e) K9 _9 T3 T8 R8 @# ?(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)1 V9 P4 y) q! @# V9 C8 v
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
, q' o. L7 T8 U. O( T* c(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)% }' F+ w' S- x/ b0 G8 b
偶尔也有人用复数:" V9 [/ g' C# H% z( |4 G2 ~
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.7 l, Z# @* {& H7 U+ z& e/ V& J
(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)
- d; ^; t* @% U* q; }6 Y: n" L(4) filthy rich:
) J* U+ |  G9 c' S. g意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
/ l1 l. }' {/ X- m(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
% K; P3 e! w* Z. a5 B/ u多半当形容词用。例如:
/ P8 k- f' ?% Q8 A% t8 R/ E- a6 tWith a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.5 q& U6 T2 A% }2 f
( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)1 L8 d: ^9 t$ ^% R4 L
Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.
$ j/ E& ]8 X( W  c0 y" H(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)4 }  S  e5 d6 ~- X# q  m
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.  e( b' B0 F7 }  X& e9 n/ M5 h
(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
  k% T7 T0 M7 i* iFilthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.
* Z+ z6 m3 j) k0 t7 u(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)) b: b, X7 j, X7 B2 ]
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)
1 c: c  X4 [; z8 \- z+ s& K(5) fairy godmother:
* z- h- |( I, F% k% G, @% ?4 `4 M指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
3 @3 }! P' b; ^  _(多半指有钱的女人)
; a9 d# C( w- T5 V2 M7 W(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:9 H( H- x+ e6 U  c# M5 K5 L8 c
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.
# `9 B; A: G. I2 W! i(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)3 Y5 j* i; v$ i2 {
After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.
* \, v% z" X9 F! P4 p5 N- w(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
$ S( ]' G4 g! v3 _0 H& c有时也用复数:6 r+ C5 V" `* [  Z
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.
7 S. e1 d& K) I6 B1 M, a(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)% n# o1 A: k! l# a3 ~
In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.% |/ k( i8 y* e  k7 d+ p
(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)% k0 U9 \) P; }: ^- `/ T

6)eye opener:
6 f- Z. d4 S: y2 a$ W. n  I8 c指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)5 ^, ^  ^$ K6 w9 Q$ d/ A5 A0 z
(当名词用;通常只用单数)3 O: X3 K2 f7 Y+ D% m  r
例如:: r. M7 `& m3 f. }! W. V
Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.+ n* C( B  f' f1 E3 f9 V
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)
8 H1 Z* T- |  `: u7 ?Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
! v$ d! z6 j, }6 A% v" b2 g(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
2 d5 Z) c; L( l2 c, _The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.. V# c+ x! w  P4 ]* K# R
(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)% c# V1 H( c0 r0 w+ j8 g
Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.
2 y; d8 t; T6 g- ~( B6 G$ x(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)5 v' r" a9 b; D- u
(7) hot dog:
/ s( D7 Y; H2 m9 `指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)
/ x" X) x7 I& t/ W( y: D, i例如:, Y* R8 r9 D$ N2 ~  P6 H
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.
4 a+ x6 f9 j0 C, n  B: U( Q$ B. w(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)  f% \. O3 z  b& g5 t1 K/ m1 j6 i$ m# V
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)
' k' q0 ^  d! P: N6 o% MIn front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.1 @! S( E7 }2 m, D8 ]8 R
(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)1 V( C( c, t# w. p5 \
(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)# {; n& D7 I/ e% P
During the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.% _7 `* G# v0 p) ^) K; a
(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)
' @+ s  `+ V% v! B8 R也指真正的热狗食物:% p, q2 J3 `. Z1 c- Y5 ?1 ?1 m
The hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.+ w+ e' D0 a* J$ Z1 p; I( v

(8)eager beaver:/ U. r! c9 v( j! D
指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)0 s$ n2 z: ?0 i+ r+ {
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)
5 E1 a0 A0 J$ ]" w# e! b(当名词用,可指男女)/ ]/ c: O5 |2 z, p5 \6 u3 Q6 K# J
例如:
  w; B& L+ M4 ~7 hJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
+ R4 c( m( {1 Z; J) C# D(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)2 c7 S$ p+ p7 |% i8 c% z5 q
Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.7 E! K4 [+ k" `
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
" c5 P9 w% K1 d& [7 C! k; N" g& p% f, p( iDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?9 D/ N2 u$ k" ]
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
% ]' Q+ G) T: O% c- d: SYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
/ F+ F  `$ r# S7 f7 i, {(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)* o5 W7 e+ ?$ ~! W1 {/ _9 e
(9)doubting Thomas:: L% \- l0 n8 G2 @/ g) T; m9 b
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)
. G$ W( z( K* [" |& g* h2 q(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活). c6 C8 [6 u' P8 A. ~. h0 C; N- }6 W
(当名词用)
- I/ B5 G- D" W) ]4 f例如:# [$ O; M2 W: n0 H# v: _5 d
I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.
- Z* o: x3 A; J; v6 T) g(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
% K: P2 n4 A/ Q# PThere must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.) }! D  \( n+ I1 k4 A+ \8 l) p1 y
(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)5 i! v% r% a8 c
也可用复数:+ @1 I, Q+ z! f
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.
6 q8 B& K% E  O, u(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)
' C4 x/ K5 X. f. t' w$ }If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.4 E; F3 R% S: K: B
(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)) S# Y! s7 U; ~% V/ b7 l
(10)dragon lady:+ G4 p4 ]1 I" Q, X% g  }3 L
指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
  i. K3 ~6 \; e2 B& f  P  W& X例如:
& w2 Z- \. Q. S- JThe chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
8 s5 n5 S" t, s( r) x(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)
7 d- c$ B3 j' h) II am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.
5 z5 z, w  c+ Z* c/ _3 n3 U  e(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
" e3 T2 _, ]" N5 h/ K" N3 K. qShould your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
! K' o, n' m: R9 Q; X$ `* i(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)- L* P. G" D0 {
也可用复数:8 a! \& q3 f, Y5 h
There may be many dragon ladies in our community.
; @& ]( M' A+ c(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。). {1 }1 i- U. c* @, h
注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
