Edmonton – Mill Woods is one of the city’s most diverse ridings, with people who have immigrated from all over the world calling it home.! o4 J4 P3 U8 a. g) @; N( \ U! r

“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.$ m/ G* J# c! c; _0 q
8 t8 N0 p& ]- S* x& }Uppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.% [6 L0 G k n. m4 y! i8 J* i
“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.

- E, w2 {/ _% V2 B" u( K3 wLiberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi said the Conservative bill is discriminatory, treating Canadians with dual citizenship as unequal.

NDP candidate Jasvir Deol said the bill has many immigrant communities worried.5 O. e( s$ D. [ |6 t
“People are really, really under fear and they want to see these changes,” he said./ s+ G' n: e% }- j/ P
He said his party is unequivocal about the bill.0 H2 M+ Z$ W/ s! ~
“The NDP has a very firm stand. We opposed the changes and we voted against C-24. If we win the election, we will repeal C-24.” |
