question for shower pan?

please help me out:

% p7 ?& B6 Q+ J+ }! b$ V) Ddoes a curb needed by code in building a mortar shower pan for a tile shower? the curb looks ugly and dangerous for older people.  i wonder if i can have a tile shower without the curb, only slop and glass panel to prevent water splash out.
