) Q' p9 g- F. ~' dIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community5 h% T, Q5 O9 H4 w
Engagement Training.& a! U% a; D0 _' L. }+ W7 m h
& O& l' w% h9 _) J% yWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,% M3 M. t! e+ J
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood5 L! r7 U8 s6 h. d" J# Y0 f, y
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
, W' K( h4 f" o' e! Ytogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy I9 b/ s: [$ @- z, c
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

f4 t7 _; {; Z4 }Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
5 S; X6 B% C# l$ c0 Dof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter2 e6 k! P' P) f4 E* m+ }: }
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the: a0 r9 t( M- O# X8 ^ Z7 b" g$ x$ D
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
+ I+ z- C$ X, E, Y- U& p8 ]they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
1 P) c# s! p4 k3 z( [. n3 XIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the$ n1 @$ ^. f2 E5 T
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed4 K9 d7 d1 a& i* ?, a% Y
international peacekeeping operation.; B! A: ^8 H4 h, u; ^2 }8 F# y+ y- e
. O# p3 `6 b( X: z. x. vThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their, e) W5 j$ e$ }; [% f/ D9 F2 N! k
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people( D& ~7 a) c+ q- B
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
" z2 Q; ?7 v) `% J+ nscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
/ C* m8 |, Y. t. u Q% p! a7 fAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems; a1 z# P# p/ |' A* H( q( K$ ^
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs @: A( E, [" T0 K: A# K7 R
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!2 B% |- ]- W' S" R8 E2 U% ]
$ H; V1 e; U. |: G6 qAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the# @! F8 o7 a7 k4 f' a4 k
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole7 M' u% n3 ?5 G' D2 u0 x4 w( q! j
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
c) P* o; z$ Chands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
4 _& l k) p) A3 G5 CAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
9 C- d. q! ~$ L- x6 [8 k Z6 s8 Tso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
