(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
1 E6 i3 q( s! `groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work0 }9 n6 X/ h$ D
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
# S; z! X- S/ Z8 w/ g6 K6 vPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years2 w/ \! U* B" H7 J! W# r, T4 r
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
* p q! B5 b' Mconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the0 k7 `# p' h8 K1 p
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
0 t5 G! K f8 o" s( K. S Vthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter* L+ D9 }1 B. g& v- [# H' ?
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the# T% `! h' R- G; Z" D$ ^: _# {
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed) U. ]% T% v: o' z; I
international peacekeeping operation.7 j# S! `* I# r; a# {
" l( t" J. z( X5 } ^This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their' F- V# I* u7 F& [/ I" t
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people! H4 y) b. }% ~* S6 t3 | h
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV$ B+ o8 @5 h! T
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and! L" Q( h2 s4 ?% b: D2 f
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems3 g( W1 i, N5 i. Q0 `/ G3 x
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs3 I2 z* Y! I: _% }# Q' r# h# G# b, {
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!9 \9 ]/ _# S! ~, ~1 U- M4 [0 D- |

According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the9 E5 A1 R0 x$ z* p
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole; h" {- w# S/ G% E" J0 ^3 B
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the; j2 ~' h/ m, f9 H D$ \+ G
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.: W: [4 I; ?+ d+ f% n
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,0 v R1 k& r& q' ^
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
