I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
& l8 Q6 z0 _ W( }9 fIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community+ d/ ]8 V6 E) U+ J
Engagement Training.

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,' m J- m# }* T# J+ S4 [; z$ H
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
0 b1 }' Q5 r8 l) agroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work3 p! f5 Q& w+ c
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy0 \( b6 K+ K" W* w1 O" I
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.. z( B$ Q9 W2 K, B8 y

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
; p# ^& b* o4 H8 MPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years: S, E& D) \5 d/ D' Z
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter% @ [, _8 F1 Q; ?8 `4 m: d
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the2 v- k( m' C- _0 u
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:, t9 I4 z( p9 J7 T& k# L0 s% O$ `& {8 j
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
1 D, x$ V/ v' g$ w. R+ OIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the3 K& Z' l, ]% v1 ] \! _+ w; G+ B. v
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
% \1 U) z T$ A, Qinternational peacekeeping operation. |' [6 z/ i2 P+ t2 E8 {2 S# o/ a

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their c2 {7 C2 |0 s/ P" p' n" x, d( b
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
; p; Y: t U3 Q3 M3 E2 w4 ?5 Cwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV: m4 }! `, u$ t# P
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and y O2 G) W, q7 N& G% `# l
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
6 T! L/ x- p) U6 i4 Mimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs. J' v& g4 \% `7 x$ v
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!* A5 X$ D E' l u9 a6 f0 i
. D2 ~0 Q2 S! x4 u U; \# G# zAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the. j5 C' l. u- W" A+ ?' l
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
3 C( ?4 Z; l0 l* Aprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the; R6 \9 I4 ^- j3 b7 r# S* |( C
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
( p- k$ N3 I5 WAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,$ K+ Y6 F; z* G3 ]3 t, q% t
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."; o7 _8 T, v" u
