I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.& q, y5 x/ ~" }: t1 b0 s
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
, l W% T3 y3 ^4 qEngagement Training.

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,' S; d( g) L! i) \- Y6 M. B
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood4 g5 V' S! ~! x1 l7 |
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work$ P* {$ k- B5 G# ^
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy# v/ t* m3 m9 B, Y6 g! s
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.0 I6 S, N5 M6 c. D! o. x8 U

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years2 N- p1 O8 M- i; N9 l2 |
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
0 `8 C1 K+ ^8 F, H0 E0 i' Q( J6 lconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the3 A, I5 {3 e* S% m2 }% g3 Z( d
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
: x" ? r2 ^) _' I5 n/ n9 s3 x+ Gthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter2 M* q+ l1 x+ p
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the5 F8 n% F( G+ k! J( A# x1 \
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
" X/ f% R0 B8 g% H5 X9 J! Pinternational peacekeeping operation.
5 O+ W; N$ j& Y+ G$ d7 j7 D9 l8 y& E8 G! S0 `9 {% N N! S
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
( Q+ y+ T3 G7 C: Fown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people/ r" H4 N7 R: t# T/ S v" u
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
" P( R2 \# S ~8 A/ cscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
$ `7 Q9 i9 t1 ^- N$ CAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
' g8 m* S& \' C+ Oimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
4 a0 @8 z* K) j6 x( cand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!* S' j: T0 E& N7 x% d
9 ?% n, E6 X! C: `/ N* m( h$ w+ kAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the% j$ k: ~1 N( o) q+ I$ H' d
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole" S+ a( ]. O% c4 @4 l* ]
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the+ B, V$ c9 U5 `: y
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around., Z. @) t9 l% B3 |4 u; g. Q( Y
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
) e g& E: H3 y' m! o3 `so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
